Royal Ballet production from London debuts on the big screen at Fisher Theatre
Sedona AZ (March 15, 2019) – The Sedona International Film Festival presents Ballet in Cinema on Sunday, March 24 when it hosts the big screen premiere of “Don Quixote” from the Royal Ballet in London. There will be one show at 3:00 p.m. at the festival’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre.
Love and friendship triumph in Carlos Acosta’s vibrant production of the dazzling ballet “Don Quixote”. Cervantes’s story of the bumbling knight has inspired countless artistic interpretations.
The knight Don Quixote and his servant, Sancho Panza, meet love-lorn couple Kitri (Akane Takada) and her sweetheart Basilio who are unable to marry as Kitri’s father wants her to marry the wealthy Gamache. Don Quixote, in true heroic style, intervenes and convinces Gamache he would rather marry the barmaid — this allows Kitri and Basilio to wed.
Acosta’s production of Marius Petipa’s 19th-century ballet brings Spanish warmth and joy to the stage. Acosta adds energy and wit to the ballet, particularly with the new choreography for Act II’s gypsy scene, which brings musicians onto the stage to add to the lively atmosphere.
Acosta chose this joyful classic for his first production for the Royal Ballet. His vibrant staging brings together the whole company in such roles as exuberant villagers, passionate gypsies and even fantasy flowers. The story follows Don Quixote’s picturesque journey to do deeds in honor of his imaginary noble lady, Dulcinea.
Sunny, charming, funny and touching, “Don Quixote” is a ballet as full of uplifting emotion as it is of astonishing ballet technique.
“Don Quixote” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre one day only: Sunday, March 24 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15, or $12.50 for Film Festival members.
