Sedona AZ (May 20, 2014) – The Royal Shakespeare Company’s extraordinary production of “Richard II” makes its Sedona big-screen debut on Memorial Day — Monday, May 26. The Sedona International Film Festival hosts the high-definition premiere of William Shakespeare’s renowned play. There will be one show at 2 p.m. at the festival’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre.

20140520_Richard-II-4Back by popular demand, the first ever live cinema broadcast from the stage of the Royal Shakespeare Company, “Richard II”, hits the big screen in the United States. The company is delighted to be bringing back this 2013 sellout production of Richard II (the fastest selling show in the RSC’s history), with David Tennant in the title role and directed by RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran.

Richard is King, ordained by God to lead his people. But he is also a man of very human weakness. A man whose vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years.

“David Tennant gives a bravado performance of a multi-layered, complex and intelligent medieval king in Shakespeare’s masterful history play. Gregory Doran’s production is superbly orchestrated. This is a lucid, moving production packed with tremendous performances.” — Daily Express

“Gregory Doran’s exceptional production is a rousing triumph.” — Observer

“A lucid and gripping account of Richard II. David Tennant is in splendid form here. In his gorgeous, gold-embroidered robes, this Richard is wrapped in the mystique of medieval majesty.” — The Independent

“One of the hottest tickets of the year” — The Times

“Richard II” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Monday, May 26 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $15, or $12.50 for Film Festival members. The Symbolism of Jan. 6

    By Tommy Acosta
Don’t mess with symbols. Just ask author Dan Brown’s character Robert Landon. The worth of symbols cannot be measured. Symbols make the world-go-round. Symbols carry the weight of a thousand words and meanings. Symbols represent reality boiled down to the bone. Symbols evoke profound emotions and memories—at a very primal level of our being—often without our making rational or conscious connections. They fuel our imagination. Symbols enable us to access aspects of our existence that cannot be accessed in any other way. Symbols are used in all facets of human endeavor. One can only feel sorry for those who cannot comprehend the government’s response to the breech of the capital on January 6, with many, even pundits, claiming it was only a peaceful occupation. Regardless if one sees January 6 as a full-scale riot/insurrection or simply patriotic Americans demonstrating as is their right, the fact is the individuals involved went against a symbol, and this could not be allowed or go unpunished.
