Sedona News – The Arizona Department of Transportation is advising drivers and area residents and businesses to plan for upcoming daytime full closures and lane restrictions on State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon.

The restrictions are needed for repair work in Oak Creek Canyon resulting from a rockfall event in March 2023.

    DAYTIME FULL CLOSURES

    • Full closures will be from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following days:
      • Monday, June 3, through Friday, June 7.
    • North- and southbound SR 89A will be closed to all traffic between the switchbacks and the Oak Creek Vista area (mileposts 387-390).
      • NORTHBOUND DETOUR: Sedona area drivers traveling north to Flagstaff will use State Route 179 to Interstate 17.
      • SOUTHBOUND DETOUR: Flagstaff area drivers traveling south to Sedona will use I-17 to SR 179.
    • The roadway will reopen to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel each day after work hours between 5 p.m. and 5 a.m.
      • A temporary traffic-signal will be in place to direct traffic through the work zone.

Oak Creek Canyon residences and businesses located north and south of the closure area will remain accessible during the closure.

    SINGLE-LANE RESTRICTIONS

    • SR 89A will be narrowed to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel between the switchbacks and Oak Creek Vista (mileposts 387-390). The 24/7, around-the-clock restrictions will be in place through late August.
    • A temporary traffic-signal will be in place to direct traffic through the work zone.
    • Drivers should expect delays of up to 15 minutes to get through the work zone.
    • A 10-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place.
    • The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.

There will be intermittent full closures of SR 89A between Monday, June 10, and late August when construction activities require it. ADOT will provide advance notice of the full closures.

ADOT and its contractor are working closely with emergency responders to coordinate and maintain access of emergency vehicles and personnel while the closures and restrictions are in place.
