logo_lettereditorBecause the North Carolina Litter-Free Coalition believes the students and adults of our nation can reshape the economy and quality of life of our communities through reducing litter, we are seeking their anti-litter posters and comments.

Students and adults across the nation looking for a summer art project might consider entering our anti-litter, poster contest. The posters submitted will be judged in four categories: elementary school students, middle school students, high school students, and adults.

20190620_PostercontestWe will be selecting a first, second and third place entry for the elementary, middle and high school students and adult entrants. Original artwork submitted will not be returned, so make a copy before you send it.

All poster submissions are to be on 8 1/2” x 11” sheets of paper, and mailed to the North Carolina Litter-Free Coalition. The artwork must be original and created by the entrants. All entrants must place their name, their parent’s or guardian’s name, grade level for the 2019-20 school year, address, phone number and email address on the back of the posters, make sure that this information is legible so we may contact you.

Entrants may submit multiple entries and the deadline for the artwork is before the first day of the 2019-20 school year for all categories. The North Carolina Litter-Free Coalition will scan all artwork submissions and post them on our Facebook page as soon as they are received.

OPTIONAL, we are encouraging all entrants to send a copy of their poster to their local newspaper and state their reasons for entering this contest and speaking out about litter in their community. Let your local newspaper and the North Carolina Litter-Free Coalition know:

What are you doing to fight litter?
    Why you are doing it?
Who benefits from your anti-litter efforts?
Why do you want others to do what you are doing?

The North Carolina Litter-Free Coalition will send copies of all posters and comments to the Governors of the states the students and adults reside.

    The Symbolism of Jan. 6

    By Tommy Acosta
Don’t mess with symbols. Just ask author Dan Brown’s character Robert Landon. The worth of symbols cannot be measured. Symbols make the world-go-round. Symbols carry the weight of a thousand words and meanings. Symbols represent reality boiled down to the bone. Symbols evoke profound emotions and memories—at a very primal level of our being—often without our making rational or conscious connections. They fuel our imagination. Symbols enable us to access aspects of our existence that cannot be accessed in any other way. Symbols are used in all facets of human endeavor. One can only feel sorry for those who cannot comprehend the government’s response to the breech of the capital on January 6, with many, even pundits, claiming it was only a peaceful occupation. Regardless if one sees January 6 as a full-scale riot/insurrection or simply patriotic Americans demonstrating as is their right, the fact is the individuals involved went against a symbol, and this could not be allowed or go unpunished.
