Sedona AZ (October 2, 2015) – The common raven is a bird that has fascinated humankind for millennia. The raven’s remarkable intelligence has led to its unique place in myths, religion, art and commerce of all peoples.
Keep Sedona Beautiful, Inc. will continue its 2015-16 Preserving the Wonder(tm) Speaker Series on Wednesday, October 14th featuring a presentation titled “The Un-Common Raven.” by Loren Haury and Diane Phelps Budden.
Members, residents and visitors are all welcome to join Keep Sedona Beautiful (“KSB”) at 5:30 pm at its historic Pushmataha Center on 360 Brewer Road to learn all about the raven’s fascinating role in history and our lives.
The evening will include complimentary appetizers donated by El Rincon Restaurante Mexicano and refreshments provided by Keep Sedona Beautiful (KSB).
The evening will highlight an illustrated overview of the common raven, particularly focusing on the charismatic bird’s keen intelligence. Also learn how Shade, the Raven, came to Sedona to participate in raven research at the University of Arizona with her owner mom Emily Cory and how Shade’s behavior influenced further work with wild ravens.
A native of Arizona, Loren Haury’s fascination with photographing ravens provided the impetus for his switching to a 35 mm digital camera 15 years ago. An ex-navy fighter pilot and biologist, his admiration for the raven was stirred by its obvious love of flying and consummate aerobatics. Haury’s raven photographs have been shown in Flagstaff art galleries and other photographs have appeared in the Sierra Club Calendar, several magazines and have won numerous awards in exhibitions in Southern California and Sedona.
Diane Phelps Budden, after 30 years of experience in corporate and academic marketing, launched Red Rock Mountain Press and self-published Shade: A Story About a Very Smart Raven.
In 2013, Budden responded to the need for a non-fiction book about ravens for middle grade children, as well as adult raven lovers, by publishing The Un-Common Raven: One Smart Bird, which is illustrated with beautiful photographs by Loren Haury.
Keep Sedona Beautiful welcomes the community and visitors alike to its monthly Preserving the Wonder(tm) Speaker Series, which is held the second Wednesday of each month from September to June. KSB’s Speaker Series focuses on presenting a diversity of programs relevant to the unique environment of our region.
