Sedona AZ (January 19, 2018) – Bring your sweetie to KSB on Wednesday, February 14, for a discussion about “Red Lava Amongst the Red Rocks: Volcanoes of the Mogollon Rim” as part of Keep Sedona Beautiful’s Preserving the Wonder™ Speaker Series.
Free to members, residents and visitors – all are welcome to join Keep Sedona Beautiful (“KSB”) at 5:30 p.m. at its historic Pushmataha Center on 360 Brewer Road. The evening will include complimentary appetizers donated by El Rincon Restaurante Mexicano and refreshments provided by KSB.
According to Charles Visser, “The spectacular Sedona landscape is the outcome of hundreds of millions of years of geologic history, a slowly unfolding drama of deposition, tectonic uplift and erosion measured in millimeters per year. A lurking, violent counterplot was played by episodes of volcanic eruption, last witnessed by the Sinagua, but driven by processes continuing today deep in the earth.”
Growing up in the tree-covered mountains of New Hampshire, Mr. Visser was drawn to the scarce rock outcrop, scrambling over every cliff and ledge in the area. He discovered geology as a college freshman during the plate tectonic revolution. Field research in Central America and the Himalayas, and an alpine geologist advisor, inspired him to head west to the Rocky Mountains, exploring for oil and gas in the Overthrust Belt, then throughout the West and ultimately on five continents. Moving to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, he led research on methods to find hidden geothermal systems, and advised island communities pursuing geothermal energy to achieve energy independence. In 2016 Mr. Visser moved to Sedona, where he finds plenty of outcrop to explore.
Keep Sedona Beautiful’s monthly Preserving the Wonder™ Speaker Series is held the second Wednesday of each month from September through May. It focuses on presenting a diversity of programs relevant to the unique environment of our region.
