Sedona AZ (September 20, 2018) – The Platypus/Rhino Fire received moisture throughout the day yesterday, and fire behavior greatly diminished. With warm dry weather ahead, some potential for fire activity remains, especially near the southern edge of the original Rhino Fire where fingers of vegetation run through steep, rugged canyons.Significant growth is not anticipated, but firefighters will continue to closely monitor the area.  If activity increases, some smoke would likely be noticeable from the Flagstaff and Sedona areas.

By Ted Grussing… and this view of Sunset Crater from the west looking east gives you the heart shape cone I was talking about a week or so ago when I sent out photos from the east looking west. The collapse of the rim of the cone on the backside is what gives us this neat heart shape. The cone is about 900’ above the surface and you will only see this view from the air … maybe from up on the peaks? Sunset Crater is always one of my favorite places to shoot.

Sedona AZ (September 19, 2018) – Containment lines have successfully prevented the Platypus/Rhino Fire from moving forward to the north and east.  Crews will to continue patrolling and mopping up these areas.Significant growth to the south is not anticipated, but there is still potential for fire to move along the southern edge of the original Rhino Fire through fingers of vegetation in steep, rugged canyons. Firefighters will be closely monitoring the area and may utilize helicopters to assist with suppression efforts should the need arise.

Sedona AZ (September 19, 2018) – The Forest Service will be placing boulders along Forest Road 152, known locally as Vultee Arch Road, near Dry Creek Trailhead, on Wednesday and Thursday (Sept. 19 and 20) to better define the travel corridor for the numerous visitors it receives.FR 152 and the Dry Creek Trailhead will not be closed while this work is being completed, however, visitors should be prepared to encounter road flaggers and experience short delays while equipment is being operated.
