logo_sedonafiredistrict2Sedona AZ (April 16, 2019) – Sedona Fire District crews were dispatched to a reported house fire on Pyramid View Drive at 01:30 Monday morning.  Upon arrival, fire crews found several moving boxes full of household items which had caught fire in the basement of the structure.  “The fire sprinkler system worked perfectly,” said Fire Marshal Jon Davis, “The occupants had been alerted by the smoke detectors inside the home and when they went to investigate, the fire sprinkler system activated and confined the fire.”  Damage to the structure was minimal and estimated to be less than $1000.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“The big takeaway from this story is that without working smoke detectors and a fire sprinkler system, the outcome could have been tragic,” said Davis.  According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), the civilian death rate is 81% lower in homes equipped with fire sprinklers and the firefighter injury rate is 80% lower when fire sprinklers are present.  “The dollar cost of this fire could easily have been hundreds of times higher without working fire sprinklers, not to mention the potential of three lost lives,” added Davis.  Sedona Fire District reminds you to check your smoke detectors to ensure that they are working properly.  For more information on home fire sprinklers visit https://www.nfpa.org/-/media/Files/Public-Education/Resources/Safety-tip-sheets/Home_Sprinklers.pdf.
