logo_yavapaicollegeClarkdale AZ (March 28, 2019) – In an effort to raise awareness about sexual assault and its prevention, and in conjunction with recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Yavapai College’s Verde Valley Campus will host a series of speakers, presentations, resources and more on Wednesday, April 3.

The event is free and open to students and community members alike.

“We all have daughters and sons, nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters, moms, dads; we all have someone in our lives who is or who are at risk to be affected by these abuses,” says Yavapai College Student Activities Coordinator for the Verde Valley Campus, Carolyn Heath. “We have to let those people know that it’s ok to talk about it even if it makes other people uncomfortable.”

Presenters include the Yavapai College Campus Police; Verde Valley Sanctuary (which, according to the organization’s website, “offers a safe haven for victims of family violence and sexual assault, providing shelter, community outreach, legal advocacy and education and prevention”); and the Southwest Indigenous Women’s Coalition.

Presentations will run from noon to 4 p.m. in Room 137 of Building M on the Verde Valley Campus.  Several area resources—including Northern Arizona Care and Services After Assault and Mental Health Coalition Verde Valley—will have representatives, information and more at tables in the Mabery Pavilion from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For an agenda of presentations and a list of organizations and resources that will be present for the event, please go online to www.yc.edu/bts.

    By Tommy Acosta

One of my guilty little pleasures is imagining what I would do if I was in someone else’s shoes, especially politicians. In this essay I would love to jump into the shoes of Curtis Sliwa, a former New York City vigilante who founded the Guardian Angels and is now running as a Republican for mayor of his city.
