Camp Verde AZ (May 16, 2018) – This year brings exciting changes to Summer Reading (SRP) at Camp Verde Community Library with the goal of getting back to the basics of reading. All ages from 0-100 will focus on music with SRP 2018: Libraries Rock! June 1 – July 20. We’ll kickoff the summer on Wednesday, June 6 at 6:00p (note: the date has changed since the Kudos4Kids magazine went to press) with a family concert and sing-along featuring The Jerome Ukulele Orchestra at the library. SRP programs geared to kids in the Children’s Library and to teens in the Teen Library will continue weekly through July 20. All programs and activities are FREE.

The Children’s Library is restructuring the way kids earn rewards this year. Small incentives like coupons and pool passes will be available along the way, but the main goal is to give children in Camp Verde the opportunity to see that reading can make a difference in the world while also rewarding them for their reading this summer. Participating children will learn what life is like for other children around the globe throughout the summer as we participate in Heifer International’s Read to Feed Program.

“During last year’s Summer Reading Program we heard from parents that their children didn’t want to sign-up because they felt they had no chance to win a prize. They read all summer and attended the programs but didn’t log their reading,” said Youth Services Librarian, Nadia Torabi. So… this year we are making BIG changes. “We believe today’s parents want their children involved in programs that support their values and that we, as a community, have the power to make the world a better place.”

The more kids read, the more we can feed. By participating in Read to Feed, a reading incentive program, we foster in children a love for reading, a passion to help others, and a motivation to help create a better world. Adult readers are encouraged to pass on their love of reading by sponsoring children at cents per minute. Friends, family members, associates and/or adult library patrons may be asked to sponsor a child to read at a penny per minute to raise money that will provide a hand-up (not a handout) to a family or community experiencing poverty.

We make it easy to choose a sponsorship level. The library is interested in knowing the number of minutes children in our summer program read. By asking sponsors to pledge 1 cent per minute of reading at Level 1, 2 or 3 we encourage children to spend at least 20 minutes per day reading or being read to. The chart below breaks down the amount earned by children reading ate each level and shows how affordable it is to sponsor a child or two this summer.

Reward for Reading: The Friends of Camp Verde Library is sponsoring a Scholastic Book Fair for children and teens. Each child or teen participating in our summer reading program earns a coupon to pick a book of his/her choosing from a selection of books at book fair the SRP 2018 Grand Finale. Parents, family members, friends and visitors can help support the Friends when they buy books at the book fair! Look for complete details, times, and a calendar of special programs and events on SRP 2018: Libraries Rock! on our website at www.cvlibrary.org/srp-2018  or call Nadia at 928-554-8387 for Children’s programs or Zack at 928-554-8390 for Teen programs. Or, stop by the library during open hours Monday-Thursday 9:00a-8:00p or Friday-Saturday 9:00a-5:00p to find out more.
