Recognizing Local Heroes
On Thursday, February 12, 2026, Joyce Ziebarth of SAVCO visited Korean War veteran Don Wilson at his home in West Sedona. Don, a Marine Sergeant, served in the Korean War, returned home to start a family, and earned a master’s degree in psychotherapy from Wisconsin. An avid long-distance runner, Don eventually retired to Sedona and now lives with his daughter, Lisa Wilson. Don’s memories are intact due to the detailed hardcover photo book that his daughters put together with photos of his time in the Marines and the wonderful family he and his wife raised.
Later that same day, during the monthly SAVCO meeting, Vietnam veteran Dave Fanning was presented with a quilt by Joyce. Dave deployed to Vietnam in August 1971 and was stationed in Phu Loi with the 128th Assault Helicopter Company as an Aircraft Electrician. He later served in DeNang – I CORP as a Security Guard at Freedom Hill (Hill 327). Reflecting on his service, Dave shared, “I took a 90-day early out in exchange for one year in the Army Reserve, Denver, CO.” Dave retired to Sedona and is an avid golfer and hiker and shared the best thing one can say to a Vietnam veteran is “Welcome home”.
