Sedona, AZ -How is the Society for Neuroscience [“30,000 members in more than 95 countries”] holding their meeting in San Diego, California, from November 15 – 19, 2025, and they cannot dedicate the entire meeting to human intelligence? How do they already have dates and plans for other meetings, [D.C. November 2026. Chicago, October 2027. San Diego, November 2028] and no human intelligence as their central priority?

How can they be having their third meeting since ChatGPT [shipped November, 2022] and not realize that human intelligence is at the crossroads? What exactly is their purpose, studying the human brain if they cannot define, explain, postulate mechanisms for human intelligence and propound paths to problem-solving even as human society detours into an unknown?

There is no brain problem that is bigger than the threat that human intelligence would recline. Or, the biggest disease this century would be human intelligence demotion, human intelligence replacement, human intelligence incapacitation or human intelligence catastrophe.

Evidence of this is already billowing, where people are using artificial intelligence for tasks that they would have otherwise been unlikely to do or complete.

AI, also, is already ascending the human work curve, such that there would soon be no duty that AI would not be able to make substantial contributions. Humanity is entering into an AI-centered human intelligence era, such that AI is not augmenting or complementing but AI is the possibility for which work is done. How does the SfN not feel responsible for humanity, amid this crisis? How is the SfN proceeding with their status quo, carried off by distractions?

Psychiatry and neurology — which are two major aspects of neuroscience — do not, at any time, have more people living with their conditions, compared to if human intelligence falls to AI. [Everyone will be affected, to varying extents].

At this time, the SfN should be making a lot of noise about human intelligence, with some quality theories, that whatever news is coming from the AI wing is matched by hopes provided from neuroscience about prospects for better human intelligence.

Maybe it is yet to be clear to the SfN that human intelligence is the last refuge of being human. Maybe they do not understand that another way to define unemployment is that the individual’s intelligence [at the requested skill level] is not needed — at this time, or for now. They do not know that AI could transform that to: at any time or forever.

They may not realize a reason that young people go to school or get trained is because they take over from experts who retire at some point [but that AI does not retire — tilting that balance] .

Maybe they forgot that the 21st century is already a formulated world from the unformulated one of the industrial revolution. Lots of things were getting defined and lots of possibilities existed to place people — who were not also as populated — with restricted economy-wide ruthlessness.

Training guaranteed work. There was work of equivalent remuneration, even for different skill areas. Now, reskilling is tough. Though people still try, but AI already got trained — on what matters.

Maybe the SfN also forgot that human intelligence is an economic ticket. However, when recruiters find someone who offers better intelligence — of a desired sort — the person gets the role.

How is there no emergency, urgency and intense call-to-action like this is a leap into the abyss for humanity? What is the point of the SfN, their meeting, their journals, even a lot of their research, if human intelligence, the core of human existence loses its competitive advantage? How is it not obvious that professionally AI already has substantial operational intelligence, at least to direct humans to do stuff.

If the SfN really cared about humanity, they would have made efforts, in a world where there isn’t a single human intelligence research lab.

Since it appears they do not, and they just want to do what they like, the meeting should be boycotted. The #SfN2025 will be irrelevant. The unnecessary meeting will turn out to be a waste. There will be nothing to remember about #SfN25 in a few months from now. What is at the center stage of the economy? AI. AI only has one thing that may withstand it, human intelligence and in the supposed biggest meeting of neuroscientists, it is absent. Their meeting will be a misery of their own travesty.

There is a new press release, Society for Neuroscience selects Kevin B. Marvel, Ph.D., as next Executive Director, stating that, “The Society for Neuroscience (SfN), the world’s largest organization of scientists and physicians devoted to understanding the brain and nervous system, today announced the appointment of Kevin B. Marvel, PhD, as its next Executive Director, effective March 16, 2026.”

“At SfN, Dr. Marvel will lead an organization of nearly 30,000 members in over 95 countries, overseeing scientific programs, publications, advocacy, and global initiatives that support the neuroscience community and public understanding of brain research.”

“Marvel will succeed Marty Saggese, who has served as Executive Director since 2002 and led the Society through significant growth and evolution. SfN leadership expressed deep gratitude for Saggese’s stewardship and lasting contributions.”

“AI only has one thing that may withstand it, human intelligence…” As a ‘lay’ person, I’m not familiar with the society/programs, etc., but I feel your point is reasoned and urgent. My God, WHAT is more important right now. Thank you for sharing this editorial piece. I will stay tuned.

It is like at the top or towards for all AI benchmarks and evaluation.

AI is going up. Human Intelligence, does not seem to be, inspite of the existing capabilities of AI across all knowledge areas.

Quite painful that nothing on human intelligence. No effort on it, for problem-solving.

Who knows what is ahead, who knows
