This exciting event will feature Guillermo Márquez-Sterling, who will be signing copies of his compelling new book, Killing the Butterfly: A Cuban Memoir of Democracy’s Demise, alongside a stunning exhibition of internationally acclaimed glass artist William Dexter’s exquisite Octa Bowls.
Guillermo Márquez-Sterling, who arrived in Sedona six months ago as the pastor of Church of the Red Rocks, brings a rich heritage shaped by his Cuban roots.
The youngest son of immigrants who fled Cuba at the onset of the Castro revolution, Guillermo’s memoir is born from the memories shared with his elderly mother, Olga, during the COVID lockdown.
Killing the Butterfly offers a vivid portrayal of two Cuban families whose lives intertwine during the 1950s, a time when the island was on the brink of revolution. Through Olga’s poignant and often humorous recollections, readers gain an intimate perspective on Cuba’s transformation and the rise of Fidel Castro, witnessing a nation’s democratic demise through the eyes of a young woman.
Complementing this powerful narrative, the gallery is proud to present the stunning glasswork of William Dexter.
Dexter’s art reflects his lifelong connection to nature, movement, and fluidity, inspired by his upbringing on Florida’s Gulf Coast and his background in marine biology.
His signature Octa Bowls evoke the organic movement of water, light, and the sensuality of glass.
“Although I explore many ideas, I seem to return to images that have an aquatic feeling. Perhaps this reflects my childhood living on Florida’s Gulf Coast, my education in marine biology, or maybe it’s because I respond to the sensual wetness of glass,” Dexter shares.
The combination of Márquez-Sterling’s evocative storytelling and Dexter’s luminous, sea-inspired glass art creates a captivating experience, offering visitors the opportunity to engage with themes of history, transformation, and resilience through both words and visual artistry.
