logo_sedonapubliclibrarySedona AZ (January 25, 2013) – The 8th Annual Sedona Marathon will take place on Saturday, February 2, 2013. As last year, there will be members of the Library Board of Trustees and staff walking or running the 5K race, and there will be many patrons also taking part, perhaps in the 10K, half-marathon, or full marathon races.

If you’d like to get a head start on next year’s event here are some titles to look for at the Sedona Public Library: “50/50: Secrets I Learned Running 50 Marathons in 50 Days, and How You Too Can Achieve Super Endurance!” by Dean Karnazes, “Chi Marathon: The Breakthrough Natural Running Program for a Pain-Free Half Marathon and Marathon” by Danny Dreyer, “Half-Marathon: A Complete Guide for Women” by Jeff and Barbara Galloway, and “Running Well” by Sam Murphy.

Additional titles available on the topic of running are: “Eat and Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness” by Scott Jurek, “To Be A Runner: How Racing Up Mountains, Running With the Bulls or Just Taking on a 5-K Makes You a Better Person” by Martin Dugard, and “The Ultimate Guide to Trail Running: Everything You Need to Know about Equipment, Finding Trails, Nutrition, Hill Strategy, Racing, Avoiding Injury, Training, Weather, Safety” by Adam Chase.

The Library has print copies of Runner’s World Magazine, which offers training tips and trail descriptions. The magazine can also be accessed online.

If you are not able to walk or run in the marathon, please consider setting up a spot along the race route (the race routes can all be accessed at: and cheer people on. You’re bound to see a lot of people you know and they will be glad for the support.

You can also be involved in the Sedona Marathon by supporting the Sedona Public Library’s walkers and runners. Proceeds from your pledges help fund library operations.

A challenge was issued by Youth Services Librarian Karen Mack: If, by the day of the race, a minimum total of $2,013 is pledged in support of Sedona Public Library, she will complete the entire 5K with a copy of her favorite book and a monkey balanced on her head.

Karen’s official pledge sheet is at the Sedona Library youth reference desk and will be there until the race. Drop in, make a pledge, meet Karen, and on February 2, find out the title of her favorite book. You can also visit the library’s website (www.sedonalibrary.org) and click on the donate button.

Sedona Public Library is a private 501(c)(3) corporation. The land on which our beautiful library sits was donated, and the library building was constructed with private funds and is entirely debt-free. Sedona Public Library provides core services to the entire Sedona community. If the private corporation did not exist, the City of Sedona would have to take responsibility for filling this role.

The Library was started by volunteers in 1958 and was incorporated in 1966—more than 20 years before the City of Sedona was incorporated. Today, the City of Sedona and both Yavapai and Coconino Counties contribute a portion of the operational costs, but our library still relies on the Friends of the Library, and other donations and bequests for all the other costs of sustaining and preserving our library. Volunteers provide approximately 20,000 hours annually. Your donations and bequests make a huge difference.

You can find out more by following us on Facebook or Twitter (links to both are on the home page of our website). And please click on the donate button. We look forward to seeing you at the Marathon!
