… while we humans can rely on others to harvest our food and bring it to stores which are convenient for us so that all we have to do is enter the store and select what we want, bring it home and consume it, most other species are not so fortunate and must bring full concentration and focus to the job of collecting their sustenance … you can see it in their eyes … total focus … they can only afford to miss so many times before they lose the strength to try again.
The bobcat in the photo above is scanning the area looking for something … maybe a rabbit, squirrel or vole … a slight movement, blades of grass that move or a slight sound … dinner is out there!
In the photo below a great blue heron is pivoting in flight to make a move on the fish on the surface just a few feet from him. Thirty plus frames after this photo (about 2 seconds), he had the fish in his beak and was preparing to stow it in his belly. Herons and egrets (white herons) swallow their prey whole and headfirst so as to not get poked by the barbed fins on the fish. Check the concentration in his eyes and the total involvement of every part of his body in making the pivot to get down in the water and collect his meal.
Into the weekend for me and the plan is to be back Monday morning … breathing, smiling and all the other essentials of life … mostly an inner smile … I’m here! Choose to fill your days with joy … you are the only one who can make the decision and then do it!
Cheers,
Ted
If the noise of the city offend you, go afield, when
you may, with the birds and the wild, free life that
troubles not;
The growing grain and the placid sky have a kind of
voice; and though you are alone, the boundlessness of
the universe is with you.
The dream of imperishable passions in old history,
the love of mothers for children, and the love of
children, born and unborn, and all love, swarm in the soft
air, speaking to the inner ear in the still language.
Go afield with the birds and the growing grain and
the placid sky and dream and forget; and you will see
that you are changed when you awake and the gleams
of the city peep in your twilight returning.
