You’re invited to a Woman VotePower happy hour event in West photo_barbaramayer2Sedona on Tuesday, Aug. 18 at Vino di Sedona from 4 to 6 pm. There will be entertainment from Sedona women Elizabeth Oakes, Teri Bays and even me as we share celebration of women winning the right to vote so far ago in 1920.

This event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters Greater Verde Valley as women and yes, men, are invited to stop by at the West Sedona restaurant to mark that step forward in America’s history.

What is happening on a much deeper level, however, is another tangible sign of change in our area as well as our country, and its place in the world community. Just as Bob Dylan noted in the historic 1960’s that the times were definitely “a changin’…”, we who still draw breath in 2015 are called to bear witness that a much greater change is happening right here and right now. The human species is growing up into a more adult way of being – and it’s happening on our watch!

So, as much as this is an invitation to join us at Vino di Sedona on the 18th, it is also a reminder to you that whenever you look in the mirror, you have the past behind you, and the promise of a new day right there in front of you. Your own mirror can show you as a person who is open to new realities, and ready to pour the compassion in your great heart out on the rest of this world with love, savvy, and a strong dose of hope.

If you are not yet a registered voter in Arizona, look for us in a few weeks as League of Women Voters members will be around, ready to sign you up. And if you know some people of any age who still aren’t registered, use their confidence in you to get them to register and make their vote count. It’s easy – just go to www.servicearizona.com and click on the voter registration tab.

The United States of America is still the country of us all – and it is only as each one of us who makes up that “All” that our nation can move forward with hope and promise for the new time ahead. Every one of us needs to know and believe — and tell others that our vote really matters.

The right to vote is one of the most important ideals of this our UNITED States of America. And one that has been fought for and enshrined in Our Constitution.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

      – Margaret Mead (American anthropologist; 1901-1978)

“Be the change you want to see in the world.”

      -Mahatma Gandhi

    Understanding Sedona’s Home Rule Vote

If you recently moved to Sedona, you may notice that every four years, residents vote on something called Home Rule. The July 21 vote is simply about who controls Sedona’s city budget.
