Sedona, AZ — After consulting with local County Emergency Managers and District Rangers, it has been determined that effective Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 8:00 a.m. Sedona Fire District (SFD) is moving into Stage I Fire Restrictions. Sedona Fire District joins Coconino County, Yavapai County, Coconino National Forest, and other local fire jurisdictions in this action.

These restrictions prohibit all solid-fueled open fires, fire pits, and campfires. During the fire restrictions, no burn permits will be issued, and existing burn permits are hereby suspended. Fireworks and other pyrotechnic displays are prohibited unless permitted by the Fire Marshal.

    Prohibited:

    • No building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire except in Forest Service developed recreation sites (not including dispersed camping areas).
    • No smoking except in an enclosed vehicle or building on USFS managed forestlands, or in specific developed recreation sites. I want them to do (call-to-action)?

    What is allowed:

    • Petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns, or heating devices providing such devices meet the fire underwriter’s specification for safety.
    • The use of commercially manufactured charcoal grills or wood smokers is allowed on private property as long as a tight fitting lid is in place during use and sparks and fire brands are contained within the device. Devices fueled solely by liquid petroleum, LPG, or LNG are always allowed so long as the flame may be immediately extinguished without residual combustion.
    • Shooting firearms IS allowed. Just make sure to follow all federal, state & local regulations: No shooting within 150 yards of a campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area, residence or building. No shooting across a road, trail or body of water, or in any manner or place whereby any person property is exposed to injury or damage as a result of such discharge. No shooting in a cave.

    NOTE

    • Yavapai County prohibits the discharge of firearms during fire restrictions.
    • Violating these restrictions on the Coconino National Forest is a violation that carries a mandatory appearance in federal court.

Additional information can be found at https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/coconino/home/?cid=stelprdb5423784#stageI

Residents are encouraged to exercise caution and good judgment.

Sedona Fire District may establish additional requirements, up to and including the extinguishment of any fire, the revocation of any permit, and a ban on chainsaws or other equipment on a case-by-case basis to ensure the public health, safety and welfare.

Please contact the Fire Marshal at (928) 204-8926 if you have any questions.

Wow shooting is ok but not non NIOSH approved camp stoves??? Gun fire starts fires too! In fact many large uncontrollable fires are started by weapons fire at military and civilian shooting ranges and we just had a weapons fire fire out in Loy Canyon not but a year ago. What’s the logic here? Just curious because it makes zero sense.

Yep, JB….little to common in Arizona.

The largest fire started by a gender-reveal shooting in Arizona was the Sawmill Fire in April 2017, which burned nearly 47,000 acres. The fire was caused by Dennis Dickey, an off-duty Border Patrol agent, who shot a target containing Tannerite, an explosive substance, at his gender-reveal party. The target erupted in flames, immediately igniting the surrounding dry brush and leading to the large wildfire

        WS Dave,
soooo right! And don’t get me started on tannerite being legal and available to basically anyone who desires to make improvised explosive devices with fragmentation ability. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to make one either since bomb building 101 is all over the internet. And those idiotic gender reveal parties involving tannerite and firearms should all be made felony offenses regardless of any damages. It should be a felony just to attempt to to do so.

It’s all just as ignorant as the State banning fire works being used but still permitting their sale??? That’s like making meth illegal (which I know it is) but turning around and selling it!

And let’s not get into the State’s archaic gun laws around ownership and use of fully automatic heavy machine guns and other MILITARY weaponry that are permitted to be owned and used so long as they were purchased prior to a certain date.

I guess ignorance is bliss afterall?
