City of Sedona ArizonaSedona AZ (May 28, 2021) – Due to low COVID-19 case rates, ongoing vaccination efforts and updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance, effective May 26, 2021, Mayor Sandy Moriarty’s Proclamation of Emergency due to the COVID-19 public health emergency is rescinded, ending the mask requirement in city government buildings and on public transportation.

Mayor Moriarty first proclaimed a local emergency relating to the COVID-19 pandemic on March 18, 2020. The June 2020 Emergency Proclamation originally included a mask mandate for the entire city limits, but was amended in March 2021 to only require masks when in city government buildings and on public transportation.

Please note: businesses, including transit systems, may still require masks.

The city encourages residents and visitors to follow current CDC guidelines, which can be found here.

“COVID-19 cases have significantly dropped and vaccination rates continue to go up, so it is appropriate to rescind the Emergency Proclamation. If things worsen in the future, I always have the option to reinstate it,” said Moriarty.

Symbols enable us to access aspects of our existence that cannot be accessed in any other way. Symbols are used in all facets of human endeavor. One can only feel sorry for those who cannot comprehend the government’s response to the breech of the capital on January 6, with many, even pundits, claiming it was only a peaceful occupation. Regardless if one sees January 6 as a full-scale riot/insurrection or simply patriotic Americans demonstrating as is their right, the fact is the individuals involved went against a symbol, and this could not be allowed or go unpunished.
