Sedona, AZ –The Humane Society of Sedona (HSS) recently recognized four area business owners with framed Award Certificates for their exceptional community support. The Awards are part of an annual event celebrating Sedona area businesses and residents for their contributions to homeless animals. The funds are raised one dollar at a time through the Shelter’s Donation Canister Program—those clear acrylic boxes you may see on the counter of your favorite local shop.

Bow Wow Pet Boutique Sedona led the pack in 1st place, raising $400.91. Following closely in 2nd place was Anderson Auto with $352.52 and the Sedona Fudge Company raised $268.18. Each business sponsors a Humane Society of Sedona Donation Canister—a point-of donation box for funds that help the area abandoned pets. Community members play an important role in the program by donating cash and coins each time they see a canister.

This year, Connie and Steve Segner with El Portal received a one-of-a-kind Exceptional Achievement Award for their outstanding support of Sedona’s homeless animals. The Segners raised $2,176 through their unique donation program featuring beautiful hand-crafted glassware made by Steve.

“Around 75% to 90% of our annual income is from private donations, grants, or thrift store sells,” said Director of Philanthropy, Brenda Redel,“The Shelter is a stand-alone non-profit and does not receive funding from national or international ASPCs, humane societies, or other large animal welfare organizations. We are blessed by the local community members who provide the life-line, literally, that helps us save hundreds of homeless pets each year.”

Sedona and VOC residents have helped local abandoned animals for 28 years through the donation canister program, raising over $190,000 by dropping their loose change and bills into the familiar acrylic box. This past year, nearly $10,000 was collected by community businesses. That’s enough to pay for 100 spay or neuters, helping pets to live healthier, longer lives, and helping to battle pet overpopulation.

There are currently 80 HSS Donation Canisters placed throughout Sedona and Village of Oak Creek. Redel says she hopes they can reach the $10,000 mark in 2025. “I want to thank each business for their willingness to support the Humane Society of Sedona by sponsoring a Donation Canister. Sadly, we are seeing more residents having to surrender their pets to the shelter due to financial hardships and the housing crisis. The cost of pet care continues to rise and the abandoned animal crisis continues to rise, too, so every dollar in a donation box counts.”

You’re welcome! The Humane Society of Sedona is also so thankful for the caring people in this community who help to bring hope, healing, and best of all–new homes–to hundreds of abandoned cats and dogs every year.
