Four Sedona mayoral candidates participated in a special forum conducted and sponsored by the League of Women Voters on Wednesday, July 6, at the Sedona Performing Arts Center.

The five candidates: Sandy Moriarty, Samaire Armstrong, Scott Jablow and Kurt Gehlbach, answered questions provided by the League and the Chamber, as well as from Sedona citizens.

Sedona.biz video taped the event and is showing the video on its website so that those who could not attend could also see the candidates explaining their platforms and outlining their plans for the city.

It’s obvious to those of us who were there that Armstrong was the strongest of the candidates. Jablow and the mayor looked like old dinosaurs right before the extinction event. They say they will carry on but if they follow the same old path they are walking, things will only get worse with the course they set. Armstrong was the only candidate to get any applause. Gehlbach joked about playing in a sandbox and his humor was lost on the audience of which there were at least 300 in attendance. He totally blew his chances when he announced his opposition to Home rule. At least Armstrong is coming to the table with a sense of fresh new ideas. But she is only one councilor and it does not look like she would get much support if she is elected. I appreciate the video and commend Sedona.biz for filming the meeting and posting it. The biggest mistake the old council made was strong-arming the Chamber to stop destination marketing. Businesses will die on the vine because of these NIMBY’s on the council. Has anyone noticed how deserted the streets are lately? I hope Armstrong treats the Chamber with the respect it deserves.

    Compassion Has no Party

Whether you are Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, one truth remains: the vast majority of people on this planet are, at their core, decent. They believe in fairness, in dignity, and in the simple idea that other human beings matter.
