Sedona AZ (February 14, 2020) – When a shelter in New Mexico called and asked if the Humane Society of Sedona could take a transfer of 25 dogs because they were at capacity; we said yes.
The 25 arrived on February 5, 2020 and the staff and volunteers jumped into action to assist with the intake procedure. What was exciting about this transfer is that it included a “momma” and her 8 puppies that were born on January 29. Extra care was necessary for the mother as she was very weak and not producing milk.
Staff and volunteers began bottle-feeding the puppies and a special high protein diet was initiated for the mother, now named “Cleopatra”. Within several hours of arrival all dogs were weight evaluated and an eating schedule established. They were then placed into separate kennels.
Cleopatra and her puppies took up residence in a separate room that is closely monitored. A separate feeding program three times a day began for the puppies (bottle fed milk) and for Cleopatra; consisting of high protein chicken that is either boiled/baked/rotisserie. She is very weak but responding well to her diet and now producing milk. The puppies are doing well and just being puppies.
Several of the other dogs have gone through our intake procedure and are already adopted into their new homes.
Cleopatra is progressing well but has a long road ahead. Nursing takes up to 30% of a mother’s energy level, so we need to be able to maintain the high protein diet. We need chicken that either has been boiled/baked/rotisserie or you can bring raw chicken that we will prepare in our kitchen. Please bring to our shelter at 2115 Shelby Road in West Sedona between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. If preparing/delivering chicken is not possible, please consider a donation to our “Emergency Medical Fund” so we can purchase the necessary diet food.
