Sedona AZ (September 25, 2017) – The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Viceroy’s House” — a critically-acclaimed epic based on a true story — showing Oct. 6-11 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre.

New nations are rarely born in peace.

India, 1947: Lord Mountbatten (“Downton Abbey’s” Hugh Bonneville) is dispatched, along with his wife Edwina (Gillian Anderson), to New Delhi to oversee the country’s transition from British rule to independence.

Taking his place in the resplendent mansion known as the Viceroy’s House, Mountbatten arrives hopeful for a peaceful transference of power. But ending centuries of colonial rule in a country divided by deep religious and cultural differences proves no easy undertaking, setting off a seismic struggle that threatens to tear India apart.

With sumptuous period detail, director Gurinder Chadha brings to life a pivotal historical moment that re-shaped the world.

“In the film, Viceroy’s House is almost a character in its own right,” says Chadha. “It was designed by Lutyens and took 17 years to build.  Its imposing architecture was an expression of Imperial power, intended to intimidate.  I’m sure that when it was completed in 1929, no one could have imagined that in less than 20 years it would become the home of the first President of India (and it remains the largest residence of any head of state anywhere in the world!).”

Critics and audiences are raving about “Viceroy’s House”. John Powers from Vogue Magazine calls the film “sumptuously entertaining”, and it has garnered 4- and 5-star reviews from nearly every publication and critic around the globe.

“Viceroy’s House” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre Oct. 6-11. Showtimes will be 4 and 7 p.m. on Fridayand Wednesday, Oct. 6 and 11; 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8; and 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

Tickets are $12, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A, in West Sedona. For more information, visit: www.SedonaFilmFestival.org.
