Flagstaff AZ (June 25, 2015) – Fire operations will continue on the Camillo fire located 20 miles south of Flagstaff while the Horse Tank fire moves to patrol status and total acreage concluded at 3,603 acres treated.
CAMILLO FIRE OVERVIEW
Start Date: June 14, 2015
Location: 20 miles south of Flagstaff, just southeast of Mormon Lake.
Current Size: 17,596 acres
Operations Today: Crews will be conducting ignitions this morning south of Coyote Basin Ranch in the Tinny Spring area. Smoke may impact Lake Mary Road today as ignitions continue south along the highway. Preparation along the power lines for future ignitions is still occurring. Fire personnel continue to bring low severity fire along the power lines towards the south.
Smoke: Thunderstorms yesterday evening near the fire created a shift in wind direction pushing smoke into the Mormon Lake area and this trend may continue as monsoon storms occur in the evening over the fire. The majority of smoke is expected to disperse to the northeast today, which will likely impact communities such as Winslow. Smoke in the immediate area of the fire will be the densest in early morning and late in the evening, and motorists are urged to drive with caution.
Closures: The southern boundary of the closure area has been extended to FR 135, which is closed to the public. Residents of the Mahan Park subdivision who regularly use FR 135 from Lake Mary Road may use the alternate route of FR 294 off Lake Mary Road and the section of FR 135 that accesses their subdivision. Other closures include lands, roads, and trails in the vicinity of Little Mormon Mountain. This includes Forest Roads 92, 124, and a portion of 82. The area on the south side of FR 125 will be closed, but lands north of the road as well as FR 125 itself will remain open with access to Kinnikinick Lake. The Gooseberry Springs Trailhead and a portion of the Arizona Trail are also closed. See the full closure order and map on Inciweb. Delays are possible along FR 125 and Lake Mary Road because of fire personnel, smoke and equipment in the area.

Flagstaff AZ (June 18, 2015) – The lightning-caused Horse Tank and Camillo Fires continue to burn in a beneficial manner by restoring the forest and reducing the risk of severe fire. Fire Managers and crews are making calculated decisions on how to use these wildfires to restore the forest. Important tactics include allowing the fires to consume hazardous fuels with overall low severity and conducting burnout operations to dictate where the fire can move and when. Both fires are burning across the forest floor reducing fuel accumulations and promoting forest health.
HORSE TANK FIRE OVERVIEW
Yesterday: Crews performed burnout operations throughout the afternoon to solidify western boundaries.
Today: Fire activity and smoke will be lower today, as it continues to smolder and creep in interior pockets of unburned fuels.
Smoke: Visible from Highways 260 and 87, I-17, Payson, Pine, Strawberry, Blue Ridge and the Verde Valley. There was an increase in smoke yesterday due to continued burnout operations, which was normal and expected. Smoke is anticipated to be lighter most of the day today.
Closures: Forest Roads 9366R, 9384A, 9381, 609 and a portion of 9361A.
Acres Treated: 1,518 acres (management area is approximately 5,000 acres)
Start Date: June 6, 2015
Location: Six miles north of Strawberry, south of Highway 260 near the junction with Hwy 87
CAMILLO FIRE OVERVIEW
Yesterday: Personnel brought fire south with low severity fire ignitions along the KV high voltage WAPA power lines. This strategy reintroduces fire into the ecosystem while adding future protection to these crucial KV lines.
Today: Crews continue conducting burnout operations; this tactic allows fire managers to determine how and where the fire moves through the forest. Crews are preparing for future ignitions along Forest Highway 3 from FR 125 south to FR 124, and are working closely with Forest Service specialists to protect historical sites in the area.
Smoke: The majority of smoke will disperse to the northeast. It is not expected to impact Flagstaff, but will be visible from town. Smoke will be noticeable on Lake Mary Road (Forest Highway 3) and in Mormon Lake Village overnight.
Closures: The immediate fire area will be closed. Visitors should abide by on-the-ground closure signs, which will change as the active fire area moves. Forest Roads 125 and 124 (to Kinnikinick Lake) are open, but delays are possible because of fire personnel and equipment in the area.
Acres Treated: 2,381 acres (management area is approximately 46,000 acres)
Start Date: June 14, 2015
Location: 20 miles south of Flagstaff, just southeast of Mormon Lake.
Motorists should be cautious while traveling on Highway 260, State Route 87, and Lake Mary Road (Forest Highway 3). Smoke may reduce visibility and fire personnel will be working on and near the roads throughout the day. No closures to these roads are anticipated, but delays are possible.

Flagstaff AZ (June 16, 2015) – In addition to the Horse Tank Fire north of Pine and Strawberry, fire managers on the Coconino National Forest are utilizing a second lightning-caused fire to benefit the landscape: the Camillo Fire located approximately 20 miles south of Flagstaff near Mormon Lake.
The Horse Tank and Camillo Fires are fulfilling their natural and crucial role in forest health and fuels reduction. The forest needs frequent, low severity fire to restore wildlife habitat, promote healthy vegetation, reduce fuels and the risk of severe fire, and create safer conditions for residents, visitors, and firefighters.
The fires will increase in size, but not severity. Firefighters will be conducting burnout operations to manage where and how the fires move through the landscape, maintaining a low to moderate overall severity. In these cases, fire growth is desirable.
Expect smoke to increase; it will be very noticeable yet still much lighter than that of an uncharacteristically severe fire. Fire managers will closely monitor smoke impacts.
The Horse Tank and Camillo Fires are not prescribed burns. Though the resource benefits will be similar, these are wildfires that will be used as nature intended. This means they do not have planned “end dates.” Fire managers have carefully determined larger perimeters within which the fires may run their natural course. As long as conditions allow and objectives are being met, crews will continue actively managing these fires. Ultimately, fire will treat portions of, or all of, the land inside these boundaries
Motorists should be cautious of fire traffic and smoke on Highway 260, State Route 87, and Lake Mary Road (Forest Highway 3). Smoke may reduce visibility and fire personnel will be working near the roads. No closures to these roads are anticipated, but delays are possible.
