City of Sedona ArizonaSedona AZ (June 5, 2015) – The City of Sedona is on schedule for this Monday, June 15, 2015 to begin major pavement repair work on SR 89A in Uptown Sedona.  The road is in failing condition due to in part to the 25,000 vehicles that travel the road each day, based on a yearly average.  The repair work will not just address the surface of the road but will also rebuild portions of the subgrade, thereby improving smooth, safe travel and reducing the need for future disturbances to perform repairs.

Major paving work, being done by J. Banicki Construction, Inc, is slated to be complete by July 31 and all work completed by August 7, if there are no significant delays.

This project includes pavement replacement between Forest Road and just north of Art Barn Road.  It will occur in the travel lane portion of the road only and will not include the on-street parking areas.

After significant input from uptown businesses, the City has established work hours as Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Friday from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m.  No work will be done on Saturday and Sunday.  In addition, no construction will take place during the Fourth of July weekend (July 3, 4, and 5) as well as the weekend of Sedona Main Street Program’s National Day of the Cowboy event (July 24, 25, and 26).

During the first week of construction (June 15-19), motorists will observe project preparation activities throughout the corridor and demolition of the east lane between Forest Road and Arroyo Roble Drive.

Traffic will be maintained in both directions at all times.  When construction delays are necessary, the goal is to keep them less than 15 minutes.  The City urges motorists to be safe and patient when passing through the work zone.

This project was originally scheduled to start in June 2014, concurrently with the Arizona Department of Transportation improvement project through the switchbacks of SR 89A in Oak Creek Canyon.  The City decided to postpone it due to concerns of the community.  Total improvement costs are approximately $942,000.

The City will post background information and frequent status updates at www.SedonaAZ.gov/UPP in order to keep citizens informed as the project progresses.  You may also sign up to receive updates via email.  To sign up, go to www.SedonaAZ.gov/notify, and under the News & Update section, check the Uptown Paving Project box.

For questions, please contact Stephen Craver, Engineering Supervisor, at (928) 203-5059 or email SCraver@SedonaAZ.gov.
