Sedona AZ (April 11, 2015) – The Oak Creek Apples Macintosh User Group (OCAMUG) will meet on Wednesday, April 15, at the Elks Lodge off Airport Road in West Sedona.

Continuing our regular sessions of “I need to Know Q & A”, local Mac/PC consultant Alan Gore will field questions might have about the Mac. At this session, please feel free to ask any Apple-related question, from the most basic to the most advanced. Come listen, learn, and ask questions about the Macintosh computer. We stress that there are no “dumb” questions. Attendees of this portion are usually about evenly split between folks new to the Mac and those with greater familiarity with the magical machine. But everyone seems to learn something.

Computing in the Sedona School System
Mike DiPalma, Technology Director for Sedona-Oak Creek Unified School District #9, has the latest news for us on how computers are being used in Big Park Schools, in West Sedona School, and at Sedona Red Rock High. Computers and education have gone together since the computer field began, but every few years the whole relationship has to reinvent itself as society demands that their children be taught the latest, but magically within an increasingly restricted budget.
Mike DiPalma, an innovator in education, will make sense of it all by explaining how Sedona schools are handling computer technology. How are we dealing with our area’s limited Internet bandwidth? What is the equipment like? Are tablets a part of the program? Is e-textbook usage in our local future?
Last Month’s Meeting (March 18)
The Club’s own Ed Usumeckis, PhD presented the March program; “Preserving your memories”. His experience teaching “Digital Storytelling” at Yavapai College resulted in an informative wide-ranging discussion of methods related to archiving existing media in a digital format.
In the past, preserving photographs digitally required a flatbed scanner. Ed pointed out that an iPhone makes an effective photo scanner. Transparencies can be preserved by projecting them on a screen and photographing the image with an iPhone or a digital camera. 35mm slides and negatives can be scanned with a specialized scanner such as a Nikon Coolscan.
