Sedona AZ (March 7, 2015) – Founder and Executive Director of The Hummingbird Society, Dr. Ross Hawkins, will be featured by Keep Sedona Beautiful, Inc., at its Preserving the Wonder™ Speaker Series on Wednesday, March 11 at 5:30 pm, which takes place at its historic Pushmataha Center on 360 Brewer Road in Sedona.

20150307_Ross.Hawkins_RufousHb.at.Lonicera_993309Dr. Hawkins founded the Hummingbird Society in 1996 after discovering that 10% of the 340 species were endangered and at that time there was no organized effort to prevent their possible extinctions.  The hummingbird family is much larger and more diverse than most of us realize.  Variations in color, size, tail and head adornment, etc., create a rich palette of beauty.  Here in Sedona one regularly sees 5-6 species, which will be looked at in detail, as well as a sampling of a few international species with eye-popping images that are amazing to see.

The evening will include complimentary appetizers donated by El Rincon Restaurante Mexicano and refreshments provided by Keep Sedona Beautiful (KSB).

After receiving a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from U. California-Berkeley, Dr. Hawkins performed research for the DuPont Company in Wilmington, Delaware for nine years, thereafter pursuing a new career in money management.  It was the task of photographing hummingbirds that first brought about his study of them in detail.  Hawkins says he owes his early interest in them entirely to his wife, Beth, who put out feeders and flowers for them in 1988.  He later took early retirement in 1999 to dedicate himself full-time to the Society as its executive director.  He is now co-editor of The Hummingbird Connection, as well as a monthly contributor to a hummingbird column in the Red Rock News.

Keep Sedona Beautiful welcomes the community and visitors alike to its monthly Preserving the Wonder™ Speaker Series, which is held the second Wednesday of each month from September to June.  KSB’s Speaker Series focuses on presenting a diversity of programs relevant to the unique environment of our region.

Keep Sedona Beautiful, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that, by acting through the stewardship of its members and volunteers, is committed to protecting and sustaining the unique scenic beauty and natural environment of the Greater Sedona Area.  For more information about Keep Sedona Beautiful, please call 928.282.4938, or visit http://www.keepsedonabeautiful.org/.

    Beatles Tribute at Blazin’ M

I can honestly say, having grown up in the Bronx in the 60s, that if it had not been for the Beatles I most likely would have grown up to be a criminal or been killed in a violent gang war.
