Sedona, AZ: Friday, October 24, and Saturday, October 25, The Arts Academy of Sedona presents The American Labyrinth, a three-part film series and retreat that looks at race and implicit bias in this country.

This profound series asks the question, “How do we heal from trauma that is generations deep?” The series takes the audience on a journey to not only heal but also transcend the anger, racism, and hatred of the day.

“The sacred labyrinth symbolizes the journey that we internally take to find life, liberty, and the pursuit of joy.” Says the film’s creator, Dr. Karmen Smith.  She continues, “The American Labyrinth shares that healing from trauma is an individual journey that we take together.”

The event kicks off from 4-7 pm on Friday with a screening of the short film The American Labyrinth 1.  This moving film depicts a love story between a mother and son as they keep their heart open amid hate. This will be followed by a question and answer session, a performance by spoken word artist Kj Miner, and a labyrinth experience.

Saturday’s retreat features an opening meditation that will be followed by American Labyrinth II: The Smudging, and American Labyrinth III: Sounds of Freedom, a sound healing session, lively discussion sessions, lunch curated by Chef Kate, and a closing blessing by Sakina Blue Star. A labyrinth experience and a parting gift will be given to each participant.
