SEDONA, Arizona – The city of Sedona’s arts and culture program, in partnership with Keep Sedona Beautiful (KSB), invites the public to join award-winning artist James Havens as he guides the community in painting the “Red Rock | Sedona Sky” mural inside the barn at the Ranger Station Park, located at 250 Brewer Rd. from Oct. 10-14, 2025, between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

By the end of these community painting days, Havens and the public will create a stunning mural that will showcase Sedona’s breathtaking landscapes and be located at the historic Ranger Station Park barn. On Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2025 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., all collaborating community artists will be encouraged to gather for a group photo and will be asked to sign the completed mural.

During these dates, Havens will conduct educational outreach and hands-on art activities for the community to better understand and execute the creation of a large-scale original oil painting, while learning about local conservation efforts and environmental issues.

“Creating art is the very fabric of my being. Education and conservation drive my creative process. Witnessing smiles and sparking passion fuels my artistic fire. With every piece, I strive to illuminate meaningful themes, fostering a better world,” said Havens.

Havens, a renowned painter and sculptor is celebrated for his epic, large-scale museum pieces exploring historic themes, endangered species and majestic figurative oil paintings. His recent focus on conservation efforts has led to impactful projects including: Cook Inlet Beluga, Tuskers of Alkebulan and North Pacific Right Whale, spotlighting endangered wildlife and ecosystems globally. He attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif. and is currently based in Anchorage, Alaska, where he owns and operates Havens Studio & Gallery.

“When KSB President Carla Williams reached out to share the possibility of collaborating on this unique project, I was instantly interested. Being passionate about art and the environment resonates with me on a personal level. Uniting both fields, while bringing community together, checks every box to support our arts and culture program. I hope all ages will participate in this purposeful opportunity for Sedona,” said Nancy Lattanzi, arts and culture specialist.

After the community painting days – which do not require anyone to sign up ahead of time – the public is invited to meet Havens during a social meet and greet event on Thursday, Oct. 16 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the KSB EcoHub located at 360 Brewer Rd. Registration for this meet and greet is required and free at https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/kqw29jy’.

Special thanks to the Arizona Community Foundation for their generous support towards this notable project with a $10,000 grant.

    More information

In addition to the artist reception, Havens will be presenting a Moment of Art in the Council Chambers, located at 102 Roadrunner Dr. on Oct. 14, 2025 at 4:30 p.m.  For more information, please contact Lattanzi at 928-203-5078 or NLattanzi@SedonaAZ.gov.
