Rabbi Magal will lead Friday evening services on September 26 at 5:30 pm. This Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuvah, the Sabbath of Return, based on the prophetic reading from Hosea 14: 2-3 beginning “Shuvah Yisrael, Return O Israel…” The whole theme of this High Holy Day season is about returning to the correct path, and choosing blessing and life. The service will include songs to usher in the Sabbath, prayers of healing for loved ones, and Kaddish, the Mourner’s prayer in memory of those who have passed away recently or around this date in past years. The weekly Torah portion is Vayeleich (Deuteronomy 31: 1-30) in which Moses gives Joshua the mantle of leadership and comes to the end of his long life of leadership. Kiddush and Motzi (blessings over the wine/juice and sweet round challah symbolizing the fullness and continuity of the new year) and socializing follow the service.
No Minyan service, Meditation class on Wednesday, or Torah study on Thursday this week because of Yom Kippur holy day services.
The eve of Yom Kippur begins with the Kol Nidre service on Wednesday, October 1, at 6:30 pm led by Rabbi Magal and Cantorial soloist Marden Paul. Yom Kippur services continue on Thursday morning at 10:00 am. During the afternoon break there will be a discussion group led by Sheldon Hersh on the Book of Jonah from 1:30 – 3:30 pm. Yizkor memorial service begins at 5:00 pm followed by the Ne’ilah closing service that will end around 6:30 pm. A Break-the-Fast meal will be served immediately following the conclusion of the Yom Kippur services.
The Social Action Committee is collecting non-perishable foods, as well as infant formula and feminine hygiene products, for the local Sedona food pantry. During the High Holy Days the collection bin is located in the synagogue lobby.
