Today’s Photo from Ted Grussing Photography: … thinking of Spring and families

… its February and already nature is beginning to prepare for the families that are about to be … typically most of the larger birds and raptors begin to build their nests late February to mid March and beyond. Many raptors and birds will return to previously used nests and the continuation of life is played out throughout the world … Southern Hemisphere is reversed.

The photo above is of an American Avocet in breeding plumage that I took last spring on a little island in Lake Pleasant. We were pretty close to him and about fifteen other Avocets … when they fly the beauty of their plumage is spectacular and they tend to fly in a tight formation and usually return to the place they took off from within a few minutes … so once we flush them (very difficult) we back off a bit from the island or shore and wait for them to return. Cool because we get the at rest, takeoff, in flight and flares before landing.

Below is a family of Canada Geese also on the shore of an island in the northeast part of Lake Pleasant … I know many people consider them to be pests, but they are majestic birds in flight and at rest on the water. When I was a kid we used to hunt them, but never got one. They were a very rare sight in the 1950’s and ’60’s and usually well out of range … so we just enjoyed watching them fly overhead.

An organization that does a fantastic job in conservation is Ducks Unlimited … check them out and consider a membership and or donation to them. Their dedication to improving and expanding wetlands benefits all species, winged and otherwise, plus with your new membership you get a pretty cool gift!

In addition to sales of photographs already taken Ted does special shoots for patrons on request and also does air-to-air photography for those who want photographs of their airplanes in flight. All special photographic sessions are billed on an hourly basis.
