Tommy Acosta, you are the BEST! Thank you for highlighting this last celebration honoring the return of our Vietnam Veterans 50 years ago!

As a military veteran I always enjoy seeing veterans celebrated for their sacrifices. Unfortunately sometimes it takes decades to recognize them and even longer for the VA to recognize the long term environmental and psychological effects our service has had upon our minds and bodies. The PACT Act is a good starting point but hardly covers the full extent of the hazards both combat and non combat service members are exposed to both CONUS and OCONUS.
The VA studies the effects of Agent Orange and Gulf War Syndrome for many many a year and they are only now beginning to financially compensate these veterans whose populations have been dramatically reduced due to exposure to toxins and their related deadly health effects. They claim they need time to study such effects but it is obvious that it is their way of culling the heard to reduce the amount of compensation paid out. Perhaps they should study in full the effects these hazards present and develop ways to protect against them prior to exposing us to them?
Vietnam Veterans and all those who serve deserve to be treated far better than they have been by a system that cares little about them.
Welcome Home’s and Thanks for Serving are nice gestures but one cannot survive off of them nor care for their families with them.

    Analyzing City’s Legal Right to
    Ban OHVs on Public Roads

    By Tommy Acosta
Mea Culpa! Mea Culpa! Mea Maxima Culpa! I screwed up. Blew it. Totally made a fool of myself. Missed the boat. I am talking about my editorial on the OHV fight, No Legal Traction on OHVs. I assumed that it was ADOT that would make a decision on whether the city could legally ban off road vehicles from our public roads like S.R. 89A and S.R. 179. Man was I off. ADOT has nothing to do with allowing or disallowing the city to do so. ADOT’s response to me when I asked them to clarify their position, was curt and to the point. “ADOT designs, builds and maintains the state highway system,” I was told. “It is not our place to offer an opinion on how state law might apply in this matter.” It was a totally “duh” moment for me when I realized that that the decision or judgement on the OHV ordinance, would involve the state and not ADOT. Chagrinned I stand. The crux of the matter then is whether the city can effectively use a number of standing state laws that can be interpreted to determine whether the city can legally ban the vehicles or not.
