With another winter storm approaching northern Arizona, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) reminds drivers to use caution when traveling in the high-country
The use of tire chains and 4×4 vehicles is highly recommended
Phoenix AZ (December 18, 2012) – Northern Arizona is expected to receive up to eight inches of snow overnight. After last week’s storm, DPS wants to remind drivers to use caution while driving in the snowy conditions.
Please limit your travels during this upcoming snowstorm and, if possible, avoid travel all together within the storm areas.
During this past weekend’s storm, DPS responded to 178 slide offs and 87 crashes in the Flagstaff area. DPS wants to reduce these numbers by offering several tips and reminders for travelers and residents of northern Arizona.
- The use of chains or studded tires is highly recommended. This increases the traction of your vehicle and will help control your vehicle in the snow and ice.
- Use a four wheel drive vehicle is recommended. This will help with overall traction but will not help with stopping distance.
- Increase the distance between you and the vehicles you are following.
- Slow down and be prepared for emergencies around you (i.e. vehicles stopped in the roadway, crashes, etc).
- Slowly accelerate and gently apply your brakes. The sudden application of either may cause you to lose control.
- Slowly turn your wheel when steering. Quickly turning the wheel may cause the front tires to lose traction.
