City of Sedona ArizonaSedona AZ (May 29, 2015) – The City of Sedona will soon begin major pavement repair work on SR 89A in Uptown Sedona.  The road is in failing condition due to in part to the 25,000 vehicles that travel the road each day, based on a yearly average.  The repair work will not just address the surface of the road but will also rebuild portions of the subgrade, thereby improving smooth, safe travel and reducing the need for future disturbances to perform repairs.

The Uptown Paving Project is expected to begin on Monday, June 15, 2015 following City Council’s approval at their May 26 meeting of the construction contract with J. Banicki Construction, Inc.  Major paving work is slated to be complete by July 31 and all work completed by August 7, if there are no significant delays.

This project includes pavement replacement between Forest Road and just north of Art Barn Road.  It will occur in the travel lane portion of the road only and will not include the on-street parking areas.  Total improvement costs are approximately $942,000.

After significant input from uptown businesses, the City has established work hours as Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Friday from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m.  No work will be done on Saturday and Sunday.  In addition, no construction will take place during the Fourth of July weekend (July 3, 4, and 5) as well as the weekend of Sedona Main Street Program’s National Day of the Cowboy event (July 24, 25, and 26).

Traffic will be maintained in both directions at all times.  When construction delays are necessary, the goal is to keep them less than 15 minutes.

“Our focus is to complete the project quickly and efficiently while minimizing the impact to the community,” said Assistant Community Development Director/City Engineer Andy Dickey.

Community Development Director Audree Juhlin stated, “We have listened to our Uptown businesses and will relax regulations of temporary signage, outdoor displays, and special event permits during the construction.”

This project was originally scheduled to start in June 2014, concurrently with the Arizona Department of Transportation improvement project through the switchbacks of SR 89A in Oak Creek Canyon.  The City decided to postpone it due to concerns of the community.

The City will post background information and frequent status updates at www.SedonaAZ.gov/UPP in order to keep citizens informed as the project progresses.  You may also sign up to receive updates via email.  To sign up, go to www.SedonaAZ.gov/notify, and under the News & Update section, check the Uptown Paving Project box.
