Sedona, AZ — The University Women of Sedona will host their next informational meeting on Monday, January 12 at 9:30 a.m. when Carolyn Fisher will speak about The Sedona Literacy Center.
The Literacy Center provides training, teaching materials, on-going guidance and support to volunteer tutors. Currently second and third graders who need extra help, from West Sedona and Oak Creek Schools, get one-to-one tutoring in reading and writing twice a week. Since its beginning in 1988, over 600 Sedona primary students have been helped, with some of them even making the honor roll in later years. The volunteer tutors contribute something truly important in the life of a child-helping a child to read. “This all-volunteer, grass roots program could well be a model for the nation.” says program coordinator, Fisher.
Carolyn Fisher retired from the Air Force in 1994 and moved to Sedona. She discovered
that her church, St Andrews Episcopal, had begun a literacy program to help young students catch up in reading and writing. She volunteered to help, and has now led as Director of the program since 1996. Since then, she has focused on recruiting volunteers to serve as tutors, coordinating with school administrators and teachers, and raising funds as necessary.
This meeting is open to women in the Verde Valley who are interested in this topic and the opportunity to network with other women who are involved in elevating women through education. Guests are invited to attend this or a future meeting. University Women of Sedona’s mission is to give scholarships to support women in furthering their educational opportunities at an accredited local college or university. Refreshments will be served.
The Sedona chapter meets on the first Monday of every month at 9:30 a.m. at the Christ Lutheran Church of Sedona at 25 Chapel Road. For more information, contact universitywmnsedona@gmail.com.
