Optics. Optics. Optics. Who can ever forget that look on Biden’s face when he blew a fuse six minutes into the debate?
It really makes no difference to the viewing public what either candidate said during the debate because everyone who saw it walks away with the image of Biden’s stunned, deer-caught-in-the-headlights, blank and bewildered look on his face.
True, Biden did as good a job answering the moderators’ questions as Trump did avoiding them.
He had a few good moments trading insults, jousting with the ex-president, launching a few zingers himself like when he accused Trump of having the morals of an ally cat, referencing Trump’s numerous dalliances.
But nothing, nothing can erase the images of a dumbfounded Biden during the first two thirds of the debate. That vacant stare. It was like he was seeing Jesus’s Second Coming in his mind.
One has to wonder if that would be the same look Biden would have on his face if God forbid an aide walks up to him and whispers in his ear “Mr. President, Iran just nuked New York.”
Trump did have a surreal moment himself when he announced he was going to end the war in Ukraine, before he is elected. Really?
Substantively, Biden covered his bases during the debate but who could hear what he was saying when transfixed on that empty expression?
Maybe it was the lights. Something triggered his semi-catatonic state. Just what it was we might never know.
And why did he keep staring down on his lectern when the debaters were not supposed to have any notes? Were they invisible ones that only he can see?
Biden did get stronger as the debate went on. He came alive for about 15 minutes before the end.
It was when they were covering January 6 and Trump’s role when Biden said to Trump, “You’re a whiner. Something snapped in you when you lost.”
Maybe the medication Biden was given before the debate did not kick in until it was too late. Rolled over to the next day.
Maybe Biden is cognitively kaput. Some would say, “So what. Anythings better than Trump. Even a zombie.”
And then, there is a sinister, dark side to this so hang on because we are about to step into the Twilight Zone.
Let’s suppose, suppose for a moment, that Biden’s handlers knew exactly what was going to happen when they allowed him on that stage.
Finally, getting to what the title of this opinion piece actually refers to, let’s suppose there is an August surprise waiting for all when the 2024 Democratic National Convention 2024 kicks off.
Suppose Biden is forced to drop out and waiting in the wings to take the reins is…is…Queen Hillary!

I agree with Tommy Acosta and Sean Dedalus that there have been many more conversations in the Democratic Party on whether or not to drop Biden from the ticket.
Americans have a knack for voting straight up and down or across the columns that separate the political parties. The “coat tail” effect cuts both ways. That is, if a majority of citizens vote for Trump, all of the Republicans in the Trump Column will share in his success. The same holds true for President Biden. If Biden is rejected by a majority of the voters, every other democrat will suffer.
But the point is many other politicians in power have a vested interest in who wins the presidency. The Top of the ticket effects the outcome for everybody running for political office. It’s not just about Joe Biden.
It is very difficult for me to believe that the 51.3 million Americans who tuned into the Presidential Debate of 2024 will forget the portrait of Joseph Biden they saw on mass media. The images validated the findings of the Hur Report which basically found Biden’s memory to be substantially impaired and his demeanor to be particularly fragile like that of muttering old man.
America was not surprised at what it saw. It was inevitable and a concrete validation of reality. The difference is the world saw it together and this was the final ram tough stamp. She is a forceful speaker and well familiar to the American people and to very wealthy donors. Hillary has name recognition and can raise money. Hillary has President Clinton to help and Hillary was Secretary of State under President Obama. She is probably one of the most qualified candidates to run for president.
But some voters find Clinton repugnant.
Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida gave Trump the Electoral College votes he needed to beat Hillary Clinton. Would they reject her again?
But Dedalus makes logical sense. At a time when 25% of the African American vote can change the outcome of the election, can the Democratic Party throw Kamala Harris under the bus? It would leave a bad taste in many voter’s mouth, even if Harris said she was not running.
Should the Party stay with Joe Biden and risk everything? He screwed up the economy. He screwed up Afghanistan. He screwed up the Southern Border. Joe Biden has been involved in money scandals since he was Vice President. Should the Party have confidence in Joe Biden? Biden could put the Democrats out of power not only in the presidency, but in the Congress and Senate.

We all expected the Trump haters at CNN would rig the debate. Some of the questions were a bit dubious, but all in all they conducted themselves in a very professional way. Camera shots were fair, timing was accurate, and they basically let the candidates say what they wanted. And brought both of them back to their original questions if there was time left. No bullying from the moderators.
And CNN had their reputation on the line. Only MSNBC has lower ratings for a cable news operation. And kudos to CNN.
All Trump had to do was stand their and not lose it. Probably tough but then it was his plan. He was calm, more than we have ever seen, and let Biden be Biden, after 5 days of practice under the direction of Steven Spielberg displayed that he suffers from a serious disease that millions of America’s have.
