    League of Women VotersSedona AZ (December 20, 2020) – The League of Women Voters of Northern Arizona Voters Education Program, OLLI at Yavapai College – Sedona/Verde Valley, and Unify Sedona will present a stimulating discussion on LGBTQ+ rights in Arizona on Monday, January 11, 2021 from 1:00-2:30 PM via ZOOM. The presenter, Stanna Slater, will provide an insider’s update on the status of LGBTQ+ rights for Arizonans with an opportunity for Q&A.

    Stanna Slater (born Jeffery Slater) has been practicing Law in Arizona since 1989. Ms. Slater launched The Law Office of Jeffery S. Slater, P.C., in 1999, and focuses on civil litigation, estate planning, and public policy advocacy for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.  She is a former Chair of the Arizona State Bar’s Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI).  She currently serves as the LGBTQ Liaison for the City of Scottsdale.

    The Symbolism of Jan. 6

    Don’t mess with symbols. Just ask author Dan Brown’s character Robert Landon. The worth of symbols cannot be measured. Symbols make the world-go-round. Symbols carry the weight of a thousand words and meanings. Symbols represent reality boiled down to the bone. Symbols evoke profound emotions and memories—at a very primal level of our being—often without our making rational or conscious connections. They fuel our imagination. Symbols enable us to access aspects of our existence that cannot be accessed in any other way. Symbols are used in all facets of human endeavor. One can only feel sorry for those who cannot comprehend the government’s response to the breech of the capital on January 6, with many, even pundits, claiming it was only a peaceful occupation. Regardless if one sees January 6 as a full-scale riot/insurrection or simply patriotic Americans demonstrating as is their right, the fact is the individuals involved went against a symbol, and this could not be allowed or go unpunished.
