Sedona AZ (August 9, 2021) – The Sedona Historical Society (SHS) and Sedona Heritage Museum recently completed work funded by two grants to catalog a portion of almost 10,000 historic photos that were scanned, but needed to be cataloged for easy search and access.
Grants received were from the Arizona State Historical Records Advisory Board (AHRAB) and the Arizona Historical Society (AHS).
Over the past year, SHS was able to hire catalogers to continue their effort to do the necessary data entry so that a portion of their un-cataloged and digitized photos might be added to the electronic catalog.
“Prior to initiating our catalog system, SHS had thousands of historic photos scanned. Over the years, many of these have been cataloged, but there remains a backlog.”, said Sedona Historical Society President, Janeen Trevillyan. “Because of these grants, we have made significant headway in making the images easier to find by researchers, family members, citizens, and our own staff and volunteers.”
These photo files represent photos from the 1880s to 1980s and include images of historic buildings now lost, pioneer families, arts events, real estate developments, business growth and changes, Sedona’s first architect and his work, a 1950s era Sedona photographer’s collection, social, school and community happenings, real estate deals, and all manner of daily and historically significant events, and the people, places and happenings who defined Sedona during this time frame.
The AHRAB grant was possible through a partnership of the NHPRC (National Historical Publications & Records Commission), and the Arizona Secretary of State’s office and Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records.
AHS funding came from their annual small grant program for Arizona museums and historical organizations. AHS supports the preservation and exhibition of Arizona history across the state. The Sedona Heritage Museum is certified annually by AHS, a requirement of eligibility for AHS grants.
