Audience gets to join in the fun of the most treasured musical of all times; meet one of the original Munchkins and Judy Garland’s stand-in, who will host the Sedona event

logo SIFFSedona AZ (October 12, 2011) –  Follow the yellow brick road and enjoy a trip to the Emerald City like you’ve never experienced before! Join us for a journey to Oz with Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion and a whole lot of toe-tapping fun as the Sedona International Film Festival presents “The Wizard of Oz Sing-Along” on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Showtime will be 6:00 p.m. at the Sedona Performing Arts Center at Red Rock High School.

20111012 wizardofozThe Film Festival is proud to welcome two of the three remaining cast members of the original film: Margaret Pellegrini (who played one of the Munchkins) and Caren Doll (who was Judy Garland’s stand-in). Both have traveled extensively to Oz-related events and celebrations. They will introduce the film and host a Q&A discussion following the screening where they will take you on a trip behind the curtain in the making of “The Wizard of Oz.”

“You’ve seen the musical journey to Oz (probably dozens of times), but you’ve never experienced it like this before!” said festival director Patrick Schweiss. “This is your chance to experience the classic on the big screen in vivid color and get to join in the fun by being part of the show. Plus … you’ll get the added bonus of meeting one of the Munchkins and Judy Garland’s stand-in.”

Sing-Along “Wizard of Oz” invites audiences of all ages to journey from Kansas to Oz and back again. Guests will enjoy singing along with Dorothy, hissing at the Wicked Witch and cheering on our band of travelers as they make their way to the Emerald City down the yellow brick road.

Celebrate the golden age of movies by enjoying this Oscar-winning film in the fashion in which it was meant to be seen: in a grand theatrical setting on the big screen.

To enhance their powers while they are in the magical land of Oz, every audience member will receive a free “Perform-A-Long Fun Pack,” including a kazoo, mystical bubbles, a noisemaker, magic wand and more. Blow bubbles for Glenda the Good Witch and participate in a myriad of other fun activities.

To complete the Sing-Along “Wizard of Oz” experience, audience members are encouraged to dress as their favorite “Wizard of Oz” character. Munchkins, flying-monkeys, and twisters are all welcome. Prizes will be awarded for imagination and creativity, so bring out your “inner-Oz”!

“Think of it as ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ meets the great and powerful Oz!” added Schweiss. “It is an interactive, audience-participation experience and a whole lot of fun!”

“The Wizard of Oz” won two Academy Awards and was nominated for four others in 1940, including Best Picture. It won the hearts of movie lovers around the world and has become one of the most endearing classic movie treasures of all times.

In this charming film based on the popular L. Frank Baum stories, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado’s path and somehow end up in the magical land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes on her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends a brain, a heart and courage.

Come join your friends, neighbors and other classic film fans for a rousing evening of film, fun and frolic (and a few laughs) and experience “The Wizard of Oz” in a whole new way.

The title sponsor of this special event is Mary Fisher, vice-chair of the Film Festival Board who had the idea to bring this show to Sedona.

“The Wizard of Oz Sing-Along” will be shown at the Sedona Performing Arts Center at Red Rock High School on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 each or $6 for full-time students and children. Proceeds benefit the Sedona Film Festival filmmaker scholarship program.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office, 2030 W. State Rt. 89A, Suite A3, or by calling 282-1177. For more information or to order online, visit: www.SedonaFilmFestival.com.

    If I Were Curtis Sliwa
    By Tommy Acosta

One of my guilty little pleasures is imagining what I would do if I was in someone else’s shoes, especially politicians. In this essay I would love to jump into the shoes of Curtis Sliwa, a former New York City vigilante who founded the Guardian Angels and is now running as a Republican for mayor of his city.
