Verde Valley News – In much the same way a business conducts a grand re-opening after a facelift or realignment, Yavapai College is unveiling a reimagined Honors college that aims to provide academic enrichment, leadership and connection opportunities to more students.

YC HonorsThe revamped college within a college at YC, simply named YC Honors, will start taking applications from new and returning students on Feb. 1 for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Unlike the former honors program, which was limited to 25 high-achieving, full-time students, the new program is open to all full and part-time students who have earned a 3.25 GPA in high school or college.
“Ultimately, our goal was to open it up to more students who can benefit from the academic enrichment and face-to-face activities that are key to a vibrant college experience,” said Denise Woolsey, YC Honors Director. “Going forward, there is no limit to the number of students who can participate. It’s open to all who qualify,” she said.
In addition to maintaining a 3.25 GPA while in the program, YC Honors students must complete at least one honors course each semester, engage in six hours of community service, and participate in designated Honors Activities. In exchange, they receive opportunities for scholarships, volunteer service, group projects, leadership roles, and travel experiences.
“Being an honors student at Yavapai College is life-changing,” Woolsey said. “We’re challenging them on a different level in classes and with extra projects, but what makes the difference are the connections the students make, the relationships they build.”
Woolsey worked with YC faculty and leaders, including Provost Dr. Doug Berry and Dean of Instructional Support Stacey Hilton, to redesign YC Honors and make it accessible to more students with no increase in college spending.
“We are pleased with the results of a comprehensive review of our honors program and the changes created to expand this enriching opportunity to meet the needs of our students today,” Berry said.
Details about the new YC Honors college and eligibility requirements are available by visiting yc.edu/honors. The application deadline is Aug. 1 for the next academic year.
Yavapai College operates six campuses and centers throughout Yavapai County and offers over 100 degrees and certificates, two baccalaureate degrees, student and community services, and cultural events and activities.

    If I Were Curtis Sliwa
    By Tommy Acosta

One of my guilty little pleasures is imagining what I would do if I was in someone else’s shoes, especially politicians. In this essay I would love to jump into the shoes of Curtis Sliwa, a former New York City vigilante who founded the Guardian Angels and is now running as a Republican for mayor of his city.
