Sedona AZ (July 23, 2015) – On Friday 31st at 5pm on the steps of the old historic pumphouse on the southernmost end of the Creekside Plaza parking lot the Pumphouse Poetry and Prose Project will present a summer smorgasbord of poetry, prose and playwriting. As we enter the dog days of summer the members of the Pumphouse committee thought that a relaxing early evening spent beneath the cooling shade of the sycamore listening to a variety of literary treats might be just the ticket to please the palate. A gathering of powerful writers has been gathered to accomplish this feat.
Frank O’Brien is a local Arizona performance poet. He has represented the state as a member of six national poetry slam teams since 2008, including this year’s Sedona Slam team. His material is loosely spiritual and often reflects upon major life events, the human mind, and the strangely unexplained nature of existence. Frank currently resides in Phoenix, with his wife and son, where he is finishing a degree in psychology.
Martha Entin was recently the featured poet along with her husband, Christopher Pool, at the May Poet’s Corner, Sedona Art Center. She was part of the Visual Poets Exhibit “From the Heart” at SAC, combining three dimensional poetry and painting, and survived the all-night creation of 10- minute plays for the 24-HOUR THEATRE event at OLLI. Martha teaches a creative writing course, “Writing Our Way to Happiness” at OLLI and is a long-time member of the Wild Women Writers of the West. Enthusiastic and impassioned, Martha will read from her new poetry and stories.
Elizabeth Oakes’ first book of poems, The Farmgirl Poems, won a national award, the Pearl Poetry Prize. Since then, she has published four more books of poetry, as well as many poems in journals. She has a poem forthcoming in April, 2016, in Veils, Halos, and Shackles: International Poetry on the Oppression and Empowerment of Women, an anthology which includes poets, both male and female, from seventeen countries. A former Shakespeare professor, she holds the Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University and has also published scholarly criticism in Shakespeare and in poetry. Since moving to Sedona in 2012, she has read at various venues and organized readings for the Sedona Art Museum, among others.
Mary Pallais, writer and director of the Radio Play, “GOD . . . is that you God?” introduces a cast of seven in the debut of the comedy. Mary moved into the Village of Oak Creek in 2013 and became active in the Writing Salon group at the West Sedona library. She is a member of the Sedona Art Center and the Red Rock Posse. Mary Pallais is the sponsor of the upcoming “SEDONA BOOK FESTIVAL, 2015– Celebrating Authors, Theatrical and Visual Artists.” Event scheduled for Halloween weekend, Saturday and Sunday October 31 – Nov 1, 2015.
