logo_verdevalleysanctuarySedona AZ (February 17, 2016) – Dust off your boots and shine up your belt buckles: Picnic in the Moonlight is back! The event, a fundraiser for the Verde Valley Sanctuary, will take place Sunday, April 17, 4-8 p.m., at Sky Ranch Lodge on Airport Mesa. Relax with a cold beer or a glass of wine, kick up your heels to live music by Bill Bassett’s Trailblazers, learn to line dance, participate in live and silent auctions, and play a carnival-style game to win beautiful gourmet baskets filled with tasty vittles from your favorite local restaurants. Once you’ve won your basket, make yourself comfortable at checker-clothed tables and enjoy your feast surrounded by your friends and neighbors (not to mention one of the best red rock views in town). All proceeds from the event will benefit the Verde Valley Sanctuary’s emergency shelter.

“The sanctuary’s emergency shelter serves women and children fleeing domestic violence situations, and it’s in serious need of a new kitchen,” says Jennifer Yates, the board of director’s vice president. “Funds raised from Picnic in the Moonlight, including monies from the auctions and raffle, will go toward building a commercial kitchen. It’s hard to underestimate the importance of a kitchen in this type of facility. It’s the heart of the shelter. Women cook for their children in the kitchen, and it’s where they learn important life skills. The board of directors thinks it’s past time the shelter gets the kitchen it deserves.”

Tickets for Picnic in the Moonlight are $75 per person. Tickets can be purchased at www.verdevalleysanctuary.org. For more info, call 928-282-2563 or 928-634-2511. Please note that this event is expected to sell out.

The Sad Lesson of Tyre Nichols
    By Tommy Acosta
Having grown up in the mean streets of the Bronx there is one lesson we learn early on, and that’s don’t mess with the cops when they got you down, and outnumbered. The beating of Tyre Nichols at the hands of the police preceding his death at the hospital could have been avoided if only he had the sense to not resist them. People fail to understand that on the streets, cops are basically “God.” You can’t fight them. If it takes one, two, five, ten or twenty officers they will eventually put you down and hurt you if they have to in the process of detaining or arresting you. In the Bronx we would fight amongst ourselves but when the cops came it was “Yes, officer. No, officer,” and do our best to look as innocent as possible. People need to understand that cops on the street represent the full power of the state and government. Read more→
