Sedona AZ (March 8, 2016) – Renowned Arizona photographer Colleen Miniuk-Sperry will go “Crazy About Composition” with area photographers at the 6 p.m. Monday, March 28th, meeting of the Sedona Camera Club at the United Methodist Church, 110 Indian Cliffs Rd., in Sedona. The meeting will include two presentations by Miniuk-Sperry and a club meeting.
Join professional outdoor photographer Colleen Miniuk-Sperry for her insightful and educational presentation as she reviews not only the predominant composition rules, but also how we can leverage the reasons for such rules to help elicit specific responses from our viewers based on human perceptions. Hear how subject matter placement, the use of different types of lines, incorporating various color combinations, and the like can help us communicate our unique visual messages more effectively with our audiences.
During the 6 p.m. Workshop, Miniuk-Sperry will critique entries to the special competition she has sent club members. This popular annual competition issues a themed photo challenge to club photographers a month prior to the competition. She will emphasize composition in a practical, hands-on approach.
At 7:30 p.m., Miniuk-Sperry will talk about photo composition. “Anyone who has spent even a little time dabbling in photography has likely heard about the many “rules” of composition,” she says. “And the emphasis on such topic is for good reason, for how a photographer arranges the visual elements within the frame directly affects how viewers perceive his or her photograph.”
But it’s her perspective that oftentimes photographers spend much time forcing their scenes to fit the rules, which yields technically “perfect” but perhaps boring photographs rather than arranging the subject matter based on emotional responses. “After all,” she says, “as Edward Weston once quipped, ‘Consulting the rules of composition before taking a photograph is like consulting the laws of gravity before going for a walk.’”
