    Sedona News – The Mary D. Fisher Theatre is honored to continue to be the home for the Met Live Opera programs for the 2023-2024 season, presented by the Sedona International Film Festival.

    The season continues with Anthony Davis’s “X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X” live via simulcast on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. and the encore presentation on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 3 p.m.

    Plan to come early as Russ Fox will lead a pre-opera talk one hour before the LIVE production on Saturday.

    Anthony Davis’s groundbreaking opera, which premiered in 1986, arrives at the Met at long last. Robert O’Hara, who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2020 for his direction of Slave Play, oversees a new staging that imagines Malcolm as an everyman whose story transcends time and space.

    A cast of breakout artists take part in the operatic retelling of Malcom X’s life. Baritone Will Liverman, who triumphed in the Met premiere of Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones, sings Malcolm. Soprano Leah Hawkins plays his mother, Louise; mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis is his sister Ella; bass-baritone Michael Sumuel is his brother Reginald; and tenor Victor Ryan Robertson is the Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad. Kazem Abdullah conducts the newly revised score, which provides a layered, jazz-inflected setting for the esteemed writer Thulani Davis’s libretto.

    The Met Live Opera’s “X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. (live simulcast) with an encore on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 3 p.m. The pre-opera talks will take place one hour before the live Saturday simulcast.

    Tickets are $25 general admission, $22 for Film Festival members, and $15 for students. Tickets are available in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office or by calling 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W.
