    To The Editor:

Letter to The EditorI was born in Germany, 15 years after WW II ended. The burden of Nazi Germany is something I will carry until the day I die.  Would I have been brave enough to resist, knowing that if I got caught I would be executed for treason? I hope so, but thankfully, I would never have to make that decision. Or would I?

I always considered myself an American. I devoured American literature, watched every TV show and movie, and planned my first trip to the US a million times. The wide spaces, easygoing lifestyle, friendliness of Americans, and the belief that dreams can come true took hold of me. I crossed this country from one historic site to another – it all inspired me. I have lived here for 34 years now and my life here has been amazing.  I love this country.

I’ve studied the resistance movement during Hitler’s Germany. Those young people, none of whom would live to see the end of the war, inspire me. They tried to find any way they could to get out their message:  WAKE UP!! See what’s happening!  RESIST!  They couldn’t march or demonstrate; it was illegal. The government had discredited the press and taken control of judges. Sound familiar?

The situation I never thought I would be in has come. So I stand up, and I speak out, and I beg you, my fellow Americans, let’s be decent again. Let’s open the cages and reunite children with their parents.  Let’s make lying wrong again.  Let’s stand with our immigrant and LGBTQ neighbors. Let’s go down in history as having been on the right side.

Don’t make your descendants apologize for you. Have them know that you were part of saving this great nation. VOTE!

Leftist Media has programmed this fear into people. You believed every lie they told. LITERALLY HITLER. Get a grip.

        Mr. Cox,

Your response is that the fault lies with leftist media. That’s been the general response and talking point for those who support and defend Trump and his crew. Do you even understand why you say the words, “leftist media?” It is funny, because you pretty much prove the point of the person to whom you respond.

Those who have sought and achieved absolute power throughout history have often done so systematically and predictably. It is wise to reflect upon the evils in our collective history and compare them with what we see occurring today. Anyone who is taught to value critical thinking would agree. Is your stance also that we should not trust historians just as we are told to no longer trust scientists? Or do you just not enjoy thinking?

It is unfortunate that you, Mr. Cox, cannot see the danger in what has been happening, that you have been brainwashed to the extent that you simply regurgitate what you’ve been told to say (“leftist media”) without offering any kind of thoughtful response. You are playing the role that Trump and friends have written for you, and you are playing it brilliantly.

If you disagree, and you do not feel that you are a pawn for an extremist rightwing agenda, then pease feel free to explain your actual point. Make sure to cite facts and check your sources.

        Sincerely,

        Go Read a Book

I was impressed reading the letters above by Chris and Sam. It’s a pleasure to see that there are those out there who can think and write, and can make logical informed arguments. Sorry to say,but the comment by M. Cox is another that brings to mind the expression Non Compos Mentis.

Too many people who contribute on these forums are obviously ill informed, and simply react without reason or evidence based upon their personal prejudices, spouting out the same extremist nonsense over and over, ad nauseam.

It seems in recent years that there is a total disregard for our laws, starting at the top. Things are not done simply because it’s what someone wants. (and I don’t say that both sides are not guilty all too often)

We are supposed to be a Nation of Laws; the motto of the Justice Department in Iceland also applies here: “With Law is the Nation built up, and with lawlessness torn down.” We have an awful lot of rebuilding and healing to do, beginning immediately.
