logo_leagueofwomenvotersSedona AZ (September 6, 2016) – The idea of discussing politics with someone other than those closest to you who believe as you do is anathema to many. The risk of losing friendships, estrangement from family members or work colleagues reinforces for many the secrecy of the ballot and any discussions about it. The result oftentimes is that people are not aware of what’s on the ballot or what it means.

The League of Women Voters Greater Verde Valley would like to change the paradigm of silence about the ballot by offering a fun, friendly way to learn about what’s on the November ballot. Beginning on Thursday, September 29, and continuing every Thursday until November 3, the League’s board member and NAU Professor Andrea Houchard will host “Vino & Voting,” a Happy Hour conversation on the November Ballot from 5-6PM at Vino di Sedona, 2575 SR 89A, Sedona.

photo_andreahouchard2According to Houchard, “One of the reasons the LWV is doing this is because, while the presidential race gets so much attention, there is a lot more at stake. There will be ballot propositions including legalizing recreational marijuana, raising the minimum wage, election of local school board members, Arizona legislators from our District, Congressional Representatives for both the US Senate and the US House of Representatives, Arizona judges, and more. Some of these races don’t get much attention before the elections. We’re changing that and we’re making it fun.”

On Thursday September 29, the focus will be on the overall ballot. The following five Thursdays will zero in on ballot propositions, local election decisions, state election decisions, national election decisions, and a review of key issues. There will be a short presentation, time for questions and time to share with friends and neighbors about what we will decide in November. No reservations needed. Food and beverages are available at happy hour prices. For more information, contact Barbara Litrell 649-0135 or blitrell@aol.com

    The Symbolism of Jan. 6

    By Tommy Acosta
Don’t mess with symbols. Just ask author Dan Brown’s character Robert Landon. The worth of symbols cannot be measured. Symbols make the world-go-round. Symbols carry the weight of a thousand words and meanings. Symbols represent reality boiled down to the bone. Symbols evoke profound emotions and memories—at a very primal level of our being—often without our making rational or conscious connections. They fuel our imagination. Symbols enable us to access aspects of our existence that cannot be accessed in any other way. Symbols are used in all facets of human endeavor. One can only feel sorry for those who cannot comprehend the government’s response to the breech of the capital on January 6, with many, even pundits, claiming it was only a peaceful occupation. Regardless if one sees January 6 as a full-scale riot/insurrection or simply patriotic Americans demonstrating as is their right, the fact is the individuals involved went against a symbol, and this could not be allowed or go unpunished.
