All are invited to Friday evening services led by Rabbi Magal on November 28 at 5:30 pm. Join in singing songs to usher in the Sabbath, prayers of healing for loved ones, congratulations for those celebrating a birthday or anniversary, and Kaddish, the Mourner’s prayer in memory of those who have passed away recently or around this date in past years. The weekly Torah portion is Vayetzei (Genesis 28:10 – 32:3) and tells of Jacob’s escape from his brother Esau. On Jacob’s second night of travels he dreams of angels ascending and descending on a ladder. “Jacob’s Ladder” is a mystical depiction of our connection between heaven and earth. Kiddush and Motzi (blessings over the wine/juice and challah) and socializing follow the service.
Beverly Copen, former resident of Sedona, will offer a presentation on Living Your Best Life at a zoom webinar on Tuesday, Dec. 2 beginning at 3:00 pm MST. She will share insights from her books and photography about asking “Why not?” when confronted with choices. Link on website calendar.
Egalitarian, participatory Morning Minyan meets on zoom every Wednesday at 8:30 am with traditional morning blessings, healing prayers, and Kaddish, the mourner’s prayer. Come be counted in our minyan! Link on the website.
Meditation class, led by Rosalie Malter and Rabbi Magal, will meet on Wednesday, Dec.3, at 4:00 pm on zoom, focusing on sacred seasons or texts to add a deeper dimension to our encounter with Jewish traditional teachings.
Torah study, led by Rabbi Magal on zoom, will focus on Vayishlach (Genesis 32:4 – 36:43), telling of Jacob returning home after twenty years, and finally preparing to face his bother Esau. On the eve of the reunion, which Jacob fears might be a battle, he wrestles with a being that turns out to be an angel. Jacob survives and is blessed by the angel and renamed Israel, meaning “one who wrestles with the Divine.” Jacob meets his brother and, surprisingly, they embrace. One’s Hebrew name represents their lineage, and is used in ritual.
