logo_unitedbloodservicesSedona AZ (April 9, 2018) – Did you know that 500 blood donations are needed to meet our life saving needs in Arizona every single day? Join Sedona’s community blood drive on Wednesday, May 9 at St. John Vianney Church in West Sedona and make a difference both in our community and greater Arizona!

    WHO BENEFITS FROM BLOOD DONATION?

Have you heard that people involved in traumatic accidents can need 50 units of blood or more? Did you know that blood transfusions can combat the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation for cancer patients of any age, including children? Several diseases of the blood, such as leukemia, even require monthly blood transfusions. Your blood donation can make a big difference in the life of someone else. Beside whole blood United Blood Services can stretch a single donation into into three by separating platelets, red cells and plasma, all useful depending on the needs of the patient. A single donation may therefore help three different patients.

    WHY DONATE BLOOD?

Blood donations have plummeted 30% worldwide in the last 10 years. This situation is primarily due to a smaller older adult population that’s able to donate. It is important that younger generations of eligible donors step in to fill the gap. If you are or know a younger person who is not in the habit of giving blood, please consider discussing with them the need for blood donations.

    WHAT’S DONATING BLOOD LIKE?

The professionals who draw blood are very adept and insure that each donor is well cared for throughout the process. With quite minor initial discomfort from a needle stick, you can look forward to snacks and juice after as well as the great feeling of helping another in need!

    WHO CAN DONATE?

One’s eligibility to donate is sometimes a question when considering a blood donation. As long as one is healthy, there is no upper age limit to donating. Anyone with eligibility questions due to health conditions, medications, or international travel may contact United Blood Services at 800-288-2199 x5497.

    HOW DO I DONATE?

You can help by signing-up today for our next blood drive!

Donation appointments are available on Wednesday, May 9 from 11:30AM to 5:00PM. Schedule a donation time by going to www.bloodhero.com (Sponsor Code: SEDONA) or calling local volunteer coordinator Bill Bladt at 928-300-2858. The drive is held at Saint John Vianney Church, 180 Soldiers Pass Road, West Sedona. The Blood Drive is conducted by the nonprofit organization United Blood Services, which recoups its operating expenses from the hospitals.

One out of 5 hospital patients need blood. Will you join us on Wednesday May 9 to give what is truly the “gift of life” to someone whose life depends on it?

I was talking to the Sedona.biz publisher/editor the other day, Tommy Acosta, and learned that our common friend Fernando Rivera of North Carolina passed away. It was reported that life and time caught him and then overcame him, and his heart quietly and suddenly failed.
