Verde Valley News – Dogs and cats play indelible roles in the lifestyle and spirit of the Verde Valley community, and Yavapai College has an ongoing commitment to their welfare. On Wednesday, Yavapai College’s Verde Campus Dean Dr. Irina Del Genio proudly presented the Verde Valley Humane Society with $2,000 raised from their August 8 Wine & Wags event.

The proceeds were generated by Yavapai College’s first annual Wine & Wags fundraiser, and perhaps the only wine-tasting event pairing fine vintages with adorable animals. Wine & Wags invites humans and canines to the Mabery Pavilion, where bi-peds can enjoy a glass from YC’s Southwest Wine Center and the canines can participate in a host of activities – dog grooming, pet photography and puppy pools – all to a backdrop of live music. The event featured the Verde Valley Humane Society, and their crew of adoptable dogs.

The Verde Valley Humane Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, no-kill shelter, has been caring for homeless animals throughout the Verde Valley since 1982. In 2022, VVHS took in 1,275 homeless pets. VVHS also provides a host of services including animal adoptions, spay and neuter services, microchipping, dog licensing and their Pets for Patriots program, which partners hard-to-place animals with military veterans and their families. VVHS promotes respect for all animals and practices socially conscious sheltering by adhering to the guiding principles that facilitate the best outcome for each homeless cat and dog in their care.

Plans for a second annual Wine & Wags event, on YC’s Verde Campus next year, are already underway. “We are a community college,” Dr. Del Genio said, “It is important that we remain connected to our community.”
