    City Grants Available for Historic Preservation

    City of Sedona ArizonaSedona AZ (December 1, 2011) – The City Council has appropriated $4,000 in fiscal year 2011-12 to implement the sixth year of the Historic Preservation Commission Small Grant Program.  These competitive grants will be given to the owners of a designated local landmark property or a structure or site eligible to be a landmark that has been identified in the City’s Historic Resource Survey.  Over the last five years, 19 grants have been made.  The program is intended to be an incentive to designate a property as a local historic landmark. 20111201 purtymancabin In this regard, five new properties have been designated local historic landmarks thereby helping to preserve Sedona’s history.  These properties include: the Van Ess Home, the DaVoss Home built in the 1940’s; Pushmataha (the KSB offices); the Bennett-Purtymun Cabin built in 1922 and located on the campus of the Sedona Charter School; the Madole-Pony Soldier Home and the Dr. H.H. and Addie Nininger House. Each of these properties has a unique story to tell about the period of time, or the former usage of the property, the residents, or the craftsmanship of the building.

    The Small Grant Program offers grants to property owners to rehabilitate, preserve, or restore their properties.  This program will provide financial assistance to help owners improve the exterior of historic structures that are located in the City of Sedona, thus improving the overall historic character of the community.

    The program reimburses owners on a matching basis up to 50% of the cost for pre-approved work. The awards will be for a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum of $4,000.

    Eligible rehabilitation, restoration, or repair includes but is not limited to:

    • Roofs
    • Windows
    • Doors
    • Siding
    • Porches
    • Foundations
    • Chimneys
    • Architectural ornamentation
    • Masonry re-pointing
    • Reversal of inappropriate alterations and reconstruction of original architectural elements based on historic documentation

    The application and program requirements are available in the Community Development Department at City Hall located at 102 Roadrunner Drive and on the city’s website.  Completed applications must be received by Friday, January 6, 2012 and will be reviewed within the following 30 days.  All work must be completed by May 31, 2012.  Persons interested in this program are encouraged to call Sara McGee, Planner at 203-5151 or e-mail SMcGee@SedonaAZ.gov.  A meeting will be scheduled with the interested applicant to determine eligibility before the submission of an application
