Photo Editing for Artists

Sedona, AZ (August 11, 201) – Artists today know more and more of their success will come from the internet. Art competitions, internet galleries, emailing pictures of their art, all present different requirements. Yet, artists may very well be confused by such things as 300 ppi (or was it dpi?), how to change the resolution of a picture for a web site, and how to meet the specific size requirements of an art contest. To resolve these issues SAGA (Sedona area Guild of Artists) is hosting a workshop by SAGA Master Photographer Ian Whitehead on Saturday August 20, 2011, in uptown Sedona (a map will be provided on the SAGA web page). The workshop is limited to ten artists to give each more attention to each.The workshop will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm (with an additional hour for individual questions). The fee is $40. Registration for this workshop is available on the SAGA web site at: www.SedonaSAGA.com. You need to bring a laptop computer and have basic computer skills.

This workshop, “Photo Editing for Artists”, will help artists learn the basics of photographing their work, using basic photo editing software to meet submission guidelines, how to upload them to online galleries’ web sites, how to write image files to a CD or DVD, and how to submit to online galleries. Knowing these techniques will help the artists make a better presentation of their works, and can lead to increased acceptance, and sales. In essence, this workshop is a unique opportunity for artists to learn how to meet the new blended challenges of being an artist today from a recognized expert.

The concept for this program came from a previous SAGA

Workshop where a participant asked, “Why doesn’t someone teach a workshop for artists that would help them with changing the size and resolution of pictures so we can submit them to shows?” SAGA wants to meet the educational needs of Sedona’s professional artists.

Workshop presenter Ian Whitehead is a SAGA Master Photographer. For his fine art landscapes he uses a heavy field camera, not unlike that used by famed landscape photographer, Ansel Adams. The detail in the pictures is so deep, you feel as though you can fall into the picture. It is a heavy camera and with the tripod, film holders and other equipment he has to be in good shape to carry it to his target on a given day. He hikes for miles to get to the canyon’s edge. There, he sets up and focuses the camera, locks it down so it will not change, takes the camera off the tripod, marks the tripod holes, puts the camera in the tent and then sleeps there over night. He gets up before sunrise, sets up the tripod in exactly the same place, puts the camera back on the tripod, loads a film carrier into the back of the camera, and, when the sun gets just right he trips the shutter. If he is confident he has the shot he packs up and goes home. If he is not confident, he may bracket the shot by taking one shot a little be more exposed and another where the exposure is a little less.
